Dwan Edwards profile

Details on the Ravens' 2nd round 51st overall pick...

Drafted: Second round, 51st overall

Position: Defensive tackle

College: Oregon State

Age: 22

Measurables: 6-foot-3, 315 pounds

Speed: 5.1

Hometown: Columbus, Montana

Resume: All Pac-10 Conference second-team selection last season had 159 career tackles in 36 starts with 12 ½ sacks, 30 tackles for losses, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Last season, Edwards had 51 tackles, three sacks and recovered two fumbles. Gained weight steadily after arriving on campus as a 250-pound all-state fullback and linebacker.

Upside: Stout, skilled player with solid burst at the snap and above-average leg drive and intelligence as a National Honor Society student. Plays with a low pad level and occasionally exhibits pass-rush skills with his spin move.

Downside: Lacks elite speed and conditioning level and has struggled at times to disengage from blockers. Not much of a factor in pursuit.

How he fits in: Projects as a rotation player initially who could eventually supplant Marques Douglas at right defensive end.

Quotable: "This is a clean defensive lineman," Ravens director of player personnel Phil Savage said. "He's a good kid who works his butt off. He's a leader. People here aren't going to know much about him, but he's solid.

"He's never going to get in trouble off the field. He's a good person who's going to be a contributor. Our defensive line was hanging on for dear life last year when Chris Brown and Eddie George were putting it to us in the playoffs."

Aaron Wilson writes for the Carroll County Times.
