Ravens Camp Report: Monday Observations

HITTING: With inside linebacker Ed Hartwell straining his quadriceps Monday during the first fully-padded practice to the point where he expects to be out until Friday, former Jacksonville Jaguars starter T.J. Slaughter filled the void.

Slaughter ran roughshod over several running backs and decked rookie tight end Nick Eller in another aggressive exchange. He averaged 83 tackles in his first four seasons in the NFL, but is primarily slated for special teams in Baltimore.

"Since I've been here, we've not had that kind of depth at linebacker, particularly on the inside," Billick said. "He's capable of stepping in without any measurable drop-off. That's a huge advantage for us."

TRAINING ROOM: All-Pro offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden returned to practice after missing the first two days of practice with a back ailment.
"It's just sore," Ogden said.

Fullback Ovie Mughelli (sore shoulder) and cornerback Fred Weary (strained quad) were held out of the afternoon practice.

Tight end Trent Smith (leg) remained on the physically unable to perform list along with quarterback Anthony Wright (shoulder) and outside linebacker Peter Boulware (knee). Smith had hoped to be back Monday.

"Part of it is a reaction that Trent had and we want to see where he's at with the doctors," trainer Bill Tessendorf said. "We don't want to lose any options."

Cornerback Gary Baxter was held out of team drills for the second consecutive day as a precautionary measure as he works his way back from abdominal hernia surgery.

"I'm progressing well, but it's a major surgery and I've just got to keep my spirits high," Baxter said. "By the end of this week, I should probably be full blast."

Outside linebacker Adalius Thomas is wearing a brace on his wrist and continues to practice after banging it into a helmet Saturday.

Undrafted rookie Zach Norton was running on the side of the field Saturday even though he's no longer listed on the roster. Norton underwent shoulder surgery this summer to address chronic dislocations.

ROSTER MOVE: Before camp opened, the Ravens waived rookie offensive guard Monreko Crittenden.

QUICK HITS: Billick was complimentary of sixth-round wide receiver Clarence Moore, who registered a long reception, along with the pass rushing of fifth-round outside linebacker Roderick Green. ... Abney tweaked his left hamstring in the afternoon, but returned to the field to make an acrobatic reception. ... Veteran backup quarterback Kordell Stewart regularly broke containment outside.
