Ravens Camp Report: Thursday Observations

HEAP INJURED: Pro Bowl tight end Todd Heap suffered a left knee contusion in a pileup during short-yardage work and left practice.

It's unclear how long he'll be out, and it's definite that he won't participate in Friday's scrimmage at Scott S. Bair Stadium.

Heap complained about soreness in his knee, and said he doesn't know when he'll be able to return.

"It scared me, because it reminded me of old injuries that I've had," Heap said.

TRAINING ROOM: Linebacker Ed Hartwell (quadriceps), cornerback Gary Baxter (hernia), tight end Trent Smith (leg), linebacker Peter Boulware (knee), quarterback Anthony Wright (shoulder), linebacker Bart Scott (knee), cornerback Fred Weary (quadriceps), running back B.J. Sams (thumb) and cornerback Zach Norton (shoulder) didn't practice.

Billick specifically ruled Hartwell out for tonight's scrimmage, and it's unlikely that any of the players listed above will participate.
Fullback Alan Ricard had his thumb X-rayed, but it's only a sprain, not a break. His backup, Ovie Mughelli, has recovered from a sore shoulder.

SCRIMMAGE: Billick indicated that key starters such as left tackle Jonathan Ogden, linebacker Ray Lewis and running back Jamal Lewis will see limited action.

TESTY: Both Billick and offensive line coach Jim Colletto were highly displeased with the lack of intensity displayed. Rigth tackle Tony Pashos was dressed down by Colletto for continually getting pushed around at the line of scrimmage.

"The intensity wasn't quite what we're used to," Billick said. "I still don't accept it, but it's understandable."

SOLD OUT: The Ravens announced that their entire allotment of preseason tickets are sold out, the earliest in team history.

ON THE MOVE: Billick said the team still plans to move into its new Owings Mills training complex in October during the bye week.

"It's going to be a magnificent complex," Billick said. "The transition should be seamless."

QUICK HITS: The Ravens are holding a blood drive today (Friday) between 3:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the Gill Center on the McDaniel campus.
Beside a free T-shirt for all who enter, there will be a prize raffle, including two tickets to the team's preseason opener next Thursday against the Atlanta Falcons at M&T Bank Stadium. ... Outside linebacker Adalius Thomas' helmet popped off his head during an exchange with offensive tackle Orlando Brown. Brown gently tossed it back to him. ... Thomas wore Jamal Lewis' No. 31 jersey during a special-teams practice. He wore Ray Lewis' No. 52 jersey the previous day.
