Ravens promote FitzGerald, Pettine

OWINGS MILLS -- Completing staff changes prompted by Mike Singletary going to the San Francisco 49ers, the Baltimore Ravens officially promoted Jeff FitzGerald and Mike Pettine.

FitzGerald was promoted from outside linebackers coach to linebackers coach, and Pettine moves up from defensive assistant to outside linebackers coach.

A former linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals, FitzGerald is now in charge of the entire linebacking corps. He coached Terrell Suggs last season to his first Pro Bowl selection, with Adalius Thomas recording a career-high 80 tackles and eight sacks. "Anyone who saw us practice in the last year saw the energy from Jeff," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "He took the outside 'backers to a higher level, and now he'll work with the whole group."

A former Pennsylvania high school coach and graduate assistant at Virginia, Pettine was elevated after working the last three years with Baltimore as a defensive assistant, coaching assistant/quality control specialist and in the video operations department.

Pettine analyzed game video to produce scouting reports and develop playbooks. Last season, he helped new defensive coordinator Rex Ryan with the defensive line.

"Mike has earned his new responsibilities," Billick said. "We keep giving him more, and he keeps performing at the highest level."

NOTES: The Minnesota Vikings denied an ESPN report that said they are interested in trading All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss, downplaying speculation that he could be dealt to the Ravens among other interested suitors.

"I don't know where all that's coming from," Vikings coach Mike Tice told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "We haven't even had our personnel meeting yet. That stuff is just speculation, other people trying to tell you how to run your team."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that there's a 60-40 chance that the Vikings will trade Moss, who has a history of misbehavior on and off the field. There's also the question of whether Red McCombs will sell the team to Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler, and how that might affect a potential Moss trade.

"We haven't had any discussions, internally or whatsoever, about trading Randy Moss," Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski said. "We haven't even completed internal player evaluations. It's just erroneous speculation."
