Inside Ravens Training Camp - Thursday

RavensInsider's daily synopsis of camp happenings: notes, quotes, anecdotes and of course, day 4 of Billick Beard-Watch™.

WHO'S HOT: Kyle Boller hit Derrick Mason in stride on a post pattern in passing drills.

Terrell Suggs burst through the pocket to sack Boller after a play-action fake that didn't fool anyone.

Literally everyone who braved the sweltering climate to observe practice.

WHO'S NOT: Tight end Trent Smith got trucked by linebacker Bart Scott.

The offense only scored once in the two-minute drill on a Tellis Redmon run despite the head coach advancing the football a few times for situational purposes.

Return specialist Derek Abney (ankle) returned to practice, but dropped a punt. He did 10 pushups as punishment.

NEWSFLASH: Gritty nose guard Kelly Gregg hyperextended his right elbow during the morning practice and didn't return, but predicted he could be back on the field today. It was so hot that running back Chester Taylor collapsed in exhaustion and didn't return. Later, he said he was fine.

ON THE FIELD: Clarence Moore was praised heavily Wednesday. Thursday, his hands looked shaky.
Tight end Daniel Wilcox made a nice catch in heavy traffic.

Deion Sanders, who turns 38 on Tuesday, took the day off for the second time.

OFF THE FIELD: First-round draft pick Mark Clayton's holdout reached its fourth day, bringing his total to eight missed practices.

There was a Cavanaugh sighting in Westminster. It wasn't former offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh, who now coaches the University of Pittsburgh offense. It was his son, Andrew, visiting friends at camp.

The Verizon backdrop the Ravens had been using as a corporate prop for news conferences was removed after it fell over two days in a row. Ravens coach Brian Billick quipped: "Somebody forgot to pay the bill."

BEARD WATCH: In my daily observation on Billick's new-look, gray beard, it sparks comparisons to actor Tom Hanks in the movie, "Castaway." Instead of searching for 'Wilson,' the lost volleyball, Billick continues his quest for a potent passing game.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I don't know. You'll have to call the U.S. Magistrate, I guess. I need to clear it with him anytime I try to do anything." Billick when asked if he still expects running back Jamal Lewis back for Monday's practice after meeting with probation officials.

FRIDAY'S PRACTICE SCHEDULE: 9:30 to 11:15 a.m.; 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Owings Mills (closed to the public).

RAVENS FAN LINE: For updated practice information, call 410-261-RAVE (7283).

WEATHER FORECAST: A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, highs in the lower 90s.
