Birds Hit Road, Road Hits Back.

Syd Thrift is fond of saying, "Don't panic". Me? Panic? Nah. To panic, one must have had high aspirations in the first place.

Others love to point out, "You can not tell anything from April baseball". Maybe not, but I know last place when I see it.

The Orioles hit the road for the first time this season, and promptly got waxed by the Chicago White Sox, losing three of four to The South Siders.

In fact, I think I actually saw Shoeless Joe step out of a corn patch in right field, and get a few hits off of pitcher Jason Johnson. Johnson, the starter for Game 4, saw his record drop to 0-3, with an ERA over 6. The start was the shortest of his career. That is saying something when you consider the fact that he sports an overall losing record for his entire career.

The good news is, Scott Erickson and Jay Gibbons have been pleasant surprises. Erickson, coming off of surgery, has been the pitching staff's best starter. Jay Gibbons has been fantastic in Right Field, and can really swing the lumber.

The bad news? It's off to NY for 3. Sid "Doughboy" Ponson get's the GM 1 start. Ouch! We having fun yet?(Note: O's go on to win game one. Ponson gives up 4 runs)

NOTES & Etc...
----------------

- This year's unbalanced schedule is really going to hit this squad hard. It means more games against NY, Boston, & Toronto, and less against KC, Detroit, & Texas. Maybe HEAD MULLAH can sue MLB to create a new division.

Baltimore
Kansas City
Detroit
Tampa Bay
Winner takes all.................

- "The sale of the Expos to interests in Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia is starting to look inevitable. A franchise in D.C./northern Virginia would pose a threat to the Orioles, but guess what? It also would force them to field a more competitive team. Orioles owner Peter Angelos already has inflicted more damage on his franchise than a neighboring team ever could."- Former Baltimore Sun columnist Ken Rosenthal.

- Quote of the Week: "Today, was not a good day".- Hargrove after Monday's 13-4 beating.

- Stats through Monday April 15th:
* O's record is 3-9, 5th place in the 5 team AL East, 5 games back in the all important loss column.
* Hitting: .214 Average, last in the AL, 49 runs scored, 10th out of 14 teams.
* Pitching: 7th out of 14 teams, 4.46 ERA, 4.9 runs per allowed, 105 inning's pitched/111 hits.
* Fielding: 3rd,8 E's in 12 games,.983 fielding %

My parting shot. Why does every bench shot of Manager Mike Hargrove show him picking his damn nose?
