Kornheiser will be a Monday Night hit

Hide the hot dogs, trash the laugh track and brace yourself for the closest thing to an interesting personality in the Monday Night Football booth since Howard Cosell.

Balding, rumpled sportswriter Tony Kornheiser has crashed the party as ABC made an inspired choice with the Washington Post columnist and Pardon the Interruption serial kvetcher. Kvetcher is a Kornheiser word, meaning a chronic complainer.

This is an angst-ridden, whiny millionaire hack, but it works. The guy is legitimately funny, and he's smart. He won't bore fans with Xs and Os, and he won't talk over their heads like the ill-fated Dennis Miller experiment. Cosell was actually a mentor for Tony K.

While he can be arrogant, he's nowhere close to the pompous Cosell neighborhood. He'll complement the football and won't try to hijack the show. Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon will still team up for PTI, although Kornheiser has a major travel problem.

He's scared to fly, so the infamous Bandwagon will be back. His ascension gives this somewhat cynical sportswriter hope, and I wish him good luck.
