Camp Update 8/1

The Ravens completed a grueling special teams practice Thursday afternoon, suffering through temperatures in the high 90's. The session marked the return of Gary Zauner's bouncing balls. For the first time since minicamp, the special teams coach used soccer balls in a drill to teach players how to down punts near the goalline.
But why soccer balls?

"If we used a football for that drill, the ball could bounce 1000 different ways and I couldn't teach what I wanted done," said Zauner. "This way, I can show the guys exactly what I want them to do when that situation comes up in a game."

Zauner, a new edition to the Ravens coaching staff, made his mark with the Vikings as one of the most innovative and energetic special teams coaches in the league. With a cast of eager young players around him, Zauner should be able to make the Ravens' special teams among the best in the league.

Also during the afternoon session, return specialist Lamont Brightful worked on fielding punts. A routine sounding mission, but something the rookie has yet to master in the NFL.

Brightful doesn't always look natural fielding punts, and has dropped several during minicamps and training camp.

If he can't field the ball, he won't be around very long, he says. "I just need to relax and do my job".
