Acquired: Boulware was drafted in the first round by the Ravens in the 1997 NFL Draft with the fourth overall selection.
Resume: So far, Boulware has recorded 15 tackles, two sacks for 13 yards of losses and two pass deflections. Last season, the Pro Bowl pass rusher finished with a career-high 15 sacks to lead the AFC and finished second in the league to the New York Giants' end Michael Strahan. The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has 54 career sacks in 83 NFL games after concluding an All-American career at Florida State, where he led the nation with 19 sacks as a junior before entering the draft.
Role against Cleveland: Boulware will start at right outside linebacker and try to generate a pass rush against Browns quarterback Tim Couch. Browns left tackle Ross Verba is a physical sort who moves his feet well, but isn't surrounded by much talent to slow Boulware down. The Browns have allowed six sacks. Boulware will also have some pass coverage responsibilities and run-stopping duties against rookie back William Green and veteran Jamel White as well as tight end Aaron Shea.
Ravens Insider: "How difficult will it be this week to get a pass rush going against the Browns?"
Boulware: "I don't think it will be that much of a difference. Cleveland pretty much has a basic offense where they say, ‘Line up and try to beat us.' So, hopefully, I'll be able to get pressure. I'll be rushing the quarterback and I'll be dropping back in coverage."
Ravens Insider: "Would you describe pass rushing as a chess match, and how much is that cerebral quality necessitated because of your lack of size?"
Boulware: "That's the way I try to approach a pass rush from the standpoint that you're setting up moves all during the game. You're trying to get into that offensive lineman's head like he's trying to do to you. I really think it's more of an art."
Ravens Insider: "In terms of temperament, you've been described as one of the most aggressive Ravens. How much different is that aspect of your personality compared to the way you are away from football?"
Boulware: "Off the field, I try to be laid-back, try to be a nice person. On the field, I think a switch flips and it's a totally different personality for me. I'm in battle mode. I'm trying to do everything I can to win. I'm not trying to be nice. I'm not trying to be kind out there. I'm not trying to humble myself. In my mind, I'll do whatever it takes to win within the rules."
Ravens Insider: "What's your impression of the Browns' offense?"
Boulware: "One of our mistakes from last year is we didn't match the intensity they had. We've got to play with a bunch of energy. We've got to play with a bunch of intensity. I think that's what it's going to take to beat a group like that. We've got to come out fired-up and ready to play every play."
Ravens Insider: "How will you be utilized against the Browns?"
Boulware: "I think it will be more of a diverse role. Some games, I may rush a lot. Some games, I may drop a lot. I think this game it will be a combination of the two."
