What started out as a normal Friday practice for the Minnesota Vikings, during which players get to choose the music for stretching, turned into a dance-off at midfield between defensive linemen Fred Evans and Everson Griffen.
"Those guys have been doing a lot of talking about who's the best dancer, so the players got them to put up or shut up," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said.
Evans and Griffen both showed off their moves during the stretching portion of practice, which isn't unusual during a lighter Friday practice, but this time they were summoned to midfield for the dance-off.
"Honestly, what happened was, we play music every Friday. We were in the back dancing and I heard them talking about, yo, Everson and Fred need to battle," Evans said after practice was over and he had viewed the video. "I was like, I didn't even really try to get in the battle, but like the veteran I am, when the lights come on, the moves get a little serious on them. I would like to pub my dance company, Laliga Inc. and the Wolfpack."
After a 6-10 season in 2010 that saw plenty of strife with Randy Moss released and then-coach Brad Childress fired, followed by a 3-13 record in 2011, the Vikings are enjoying their December relevancy this year. But, as the video shows, they are keeping it loose.
"That's very important. You don't want to go into a game like this tight or tense because of the circumstance," Frazier said. "You really want to go out there and play with great confidence and not be all wound tight. They are not wound tight."
Who won? Evans (the one who kept his shirt on), won the popular vote – and the vote of Frazier.
"I think Fred got it," Frazier said. "I think Fred Evans surprised everybody. He did a pretty good job, some pretty good moves."
