A first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Cowboys fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Cowboys fans. Everyone in the class raises their hands except one little boy. The teacher lloks at the boy with surprise and says, "Johnny, why didn't you raise your hand?" "Because I'm not a Cowboys fan, " he replied. The teacher, still shocked, asked, "Well, if you are not a Cowboys fan, then who are you a fan of?" "I am a Redskins fan, and proud of it," Johnny replied. The teacher could not believe her ears. "Johnny, why pray tell are you a Resdkins fan?" "Because my mom and my dad are Redskins fan, so I'm a Redskins fan too!" "Well," said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, "That is no reason for you to be a Redskins fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all the time. What if your mom were a moron and your dad were a moron, what would you be then?" "Then," Johnny smiled, "I'd be a Cowboys fan."

HAZMAT (ID=0) (Sep 7, 2001 8:20:42 AM)

Hello everyone. Has the preseason hangover left yet?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:34:49 PM)
Hi guys - everyone avoiding Fri afternoon work?

Grape (ID=8) (Sep 7, 2001 2:35:00 PM)
Of course

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:35:41 PM)
John, the bad taste of preseason is still there. Have you seen improvement with the practices?

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:36:43 PM)
Wish I could say we have. But Marty doesn't let us watch practices anymore. However, Michael Westbrook said he's noticed great improvement in 7-7 drills. a couple weeks ago, he said they'd complete about 50 percent of their passes, 40 percent below normal for this drill. now they're back above normal.

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:37:22 PM)
Why do you think practices are closed? Is that normal this time of year?

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:37:29 PM)
What I have noticed is a team that's relaxed and confident. they have some personalities in the locker room, such as lavar, smoot and barber. that helps.

miguelskins (ID=6) (Sep 7, 2001 2:37:45 PM)
Hey John, do you think Marty will use a Flutie spy against the Chargers? and who would be the likely player to be the spy?

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:38:03 PM)
Because Marty doesn't want anything getting out to other teams. Many teams close most of practice to the media, but not all. the past few years under norv we'd only watch about 20-30 minutes.

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:38:07 PM)
I noticed articles from the Times pointed out a lot of joking around - I took it as a good sign

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:39:34 PM)
What do you perceive about the players moods? Are they fired up? Apprehensive?

HailVictory (ID=9) (Sep 7, 2001 2:39:45 PM)
What will the defensive line rotation be like? Is Deloach the main backup at

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:39:51 PM)
Marty has used a spy in the past against Elway. Asked him that the other day and he ducked the question, which tells me he probably would. not sure who it would be because many players in that role are too young, such as a pierce or ohalete. what helps is the speed at linebacker with lavar and barber, which could cut down on the long runs. or so they hope

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:40:42 PM)
The players are definitely ready. They're loose and that's a good sign. While they looked bad in the preseason, they haven't panicked one bit. I think they're anxious for this new beginning...

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:41:40 PM)
DeLoach likely would be in the rotation, but it depends what happens. Kenard has taken a few snaps at end in practice, in case Bruce gets hurt or needs a break. In some cases, Dorian Boose would shift inside and Lang outside. But if they need help stoping the run, yes, Deloach would be the guy

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:41:54 PM)
O.K. John I've got to admit, your post on the board intrigued me. Tell us some Norv stories.

miguelskins (ID=6) (Sep 7, 2001 2:43:53 PM)
Bruce Smith has come out and said he expects Norv to run at him because of the injury. Certainly the right side would be the weak side for us if Bruce is not 100%. Is this a ploy by Bruce to force Norv to run away from him by going public with this? Or is Bruce just saying "come on try me"?

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:44:53 PM)
Here's my take on Norv: he played the media just like he treated the players. He used a star treatment. If you worked for a huge outlet--the Post, Channel 4 (George Michael), he'd curry favors, but if you were a little guy, he wouldn't. It wasn't until i did stories for Pro Football Weekly that he changed toward me. Another thing: I bet Marty has used the first names of every beat writer more in one month than Norv did in his entire tenure. That stuff matters. Norv never got a free ride from me and, frankly, most of us are glad he's gone. he was insecure. having said that, I'd love to have him as a neighbor. away from the game, he's much better.

HailVictory (ID=9) (Sep 7, 2001 2:45:39 PM)
Will we get a chance to see McCants in any 4 WR packages?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:45:53 PM)
Thanks John....knowing a little bit about the personas of these guys makes it more interesting for me.

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:46:02 PM)
Don't think it's a ploy by Bruce. Anyone would test him, given how much time he's missed and with his shoulder. Plus Vaughn Parker is San Diego's best lineman and is the left tackle, so it makes sense they'd run that way. also, smoot is on that side...

Norvitis (ID=12) (Sep 7, 2001 2:46:33 PM)
Anyone have predictions for final score Sunday?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 2:47:05 PM)
Is David Brandt wearing an expression of fear these days? Or is he just a bit dazed?

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:47:20 PM)
McCants isn't ready to play so I doubt it. Their four receiver packages involve splitting out tight ends and backs...

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:48:54 PM)
I like Brandt. He doesn't wear much of an expression, frankly. he thinks he should play and is unfazed by what's happened. at least outwardly. he stepped in at michigan as a redshirt against Michigan State and did well. And that was a much more hostile atmosphere. then again, he didn't have junior seau coming up his fanny there....Brandt is your typical smart, tough midwestern offensive lineman. funny thing is, he sounds a lot like cory

id (ID=13) (Sep 7, 2001 2:48:56 PM)
John, you're a pretty objective guy. To what do you attribute the hateful emotions from fellow 'Skins fans when someone makes a realistic observation about the shortcomings of the team? Is it the rose-color-glasses syndrome or just pure see-no-evil, speak, etc.?

Norvitis (ID=12) (Sep 7, 2001 2:49:43 PM)
Great point id!!!!!

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 2:51:06 PM)
great question id!

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:51:36 PM)
this is an emotional sport and it's taken personally. teams are a reflection of a group--i grew up in cleveland and people there fight to the end defending that team and that city. same with skins fans. it's very much a smalltown atmosphere--which i like. but i do think there's a rose-color glasses syndrome with any team. I've noticed it and think it's funny at times, but frankly those are the fans who read every story and allow me to have a job.

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:52:05 PM)
good question, though. makes you think

HailVictory (ID=9) (Sep 7, 2001 2:53:03 PM)

id (ID=13) (Sep 7, 2001 2:53:49 PM)
On a positive note, what do you think Norv has up his sleeve regarding Flutie's play calls and rollouts to one side, then throwing to the other?

Hail! Sorry I'm late :(

John Keim (ID=5) (Sep 7, 2001 2:54:07 PM)
Kevin Lockett would back up bates at returner...bates is set there, but they'll occasionally use him on punt rush. i'm sure marty has a lot of things we haven't seen ready for san diego.

The biggest surprise for me is Brandt--is he really better than Coleman or Campbell or is it more of a youth movement thing--I can't tell from preseason--how was he in practice?

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:02:03 PM)
I like Brandt a lot. Liked him this summer--good fundamentals, keeps a solid base. and coleman, frankly, looked like someone with bad knees. that's how he played--he couldn't move well. campbell is not physical enough to play RG, unless they needed him in an emergency. when coleman is healthy he'll probably push brandt for the job. unless the kid plays well and then it's his . the competition is still kind of open

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:02:20 PM)
How do you think Smoot will handle live fire, John? I'm hoping a few PDs help settle him down and the Chargers start to look elsewhere.

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:02:51 PM)
John, how much access are credentialed reporters (I assume there are some credentials needed to get in) allowed at Redskin Park. If you can't attend practice, where do you hang out?

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:04:57 PM)
If anyone can handle it, it's smoot. here's how tense he was yesterday: he's talking about starring in Rush Hour 5 and joking around in the locker room, saying he's the best trash talker, etc. the vets seem to like him because he can back it up. his practice jersey has a bunch of their signatures. he expected to come here and beat out darrell and he did. this won't faze him. by the way, there will be something posted on the main board today, basically a conversation with smoot. it gives you a feel for him. check it out. it might even be up now.

Norvitis (ID=12) (Sep 7, 2001 3:05:55 PM)
John, who is the MOST likeable Redskins, the least likeable?

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:06:07 PM)
We don't need credentials to get in at Redskin Park. We hang out in the media press room and work, or BS, until we're allowed downstairs to interview players. there are some days when we hang out there for hours with nothing to do. not exactly the most glamorous part of the job.

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:07:25 PM)
Ummm...if you don't need credentials to do that, what's to keep RatBoy from heading down to Redskin Park and hanging out in the media room?

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:08:32 PM)
there are a lot of gusy easy to like: darrell, Jansen, samuels. actually almost all of the offensive line. smoot is easy to like, too, mainly because he's funny. there are many more guys to like on this team than to dislike... the least? hard to say. jeff was harder to deal with last year and a bit aloof, etc. but he's answered every question this year...bruce can sometimes be a little prickly. stephen is sometimes a pain, but he's not a bad guy.

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:09:02 PM)
....but there's a sniper on the building who knows what the media looks like and fires away at intruders. did i mention that?...actually, the PR people would kick anyone out who doesn't belong

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:09:53 PM)
I've gotta ask this. Given Dan Snyder's dismal image in the national (and local) media, what can he do to help himself out? Does he deal well with reporters.

jbak (ID=14) (Sep 7, 2001 3:10:45 PM)
corollary--has he ever hired an image consultant to deal with the little things--like stop wearing $3000 suits and cruising in your private helicoptor, etc.

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:11:24 PM)
Good one, jbak

Norvitis (ID=12) (Sep 7, 2001 3:11:50 PM)
All he does is add to his Napoleonic persona...

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:12:11 PM)
It would be SO easy for him. he doesn't have to change his personality. he can still be a you know what. jack kent cooke was. but it's the people he surrounds himself with. if they had softer demeanors or were a lot nicer, it would matter because that's who we deal with more than snyder. snyder can be glib and self-deprecating, which goes a long way. i will say he seems to have dropped a lot of the battles he had in the past with the media. he cut credentials for the Wash times because of their coverage of him. and his henchmen tried to bully others to stop freelancing for a certain magazine, that happened to compete with theirs..

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:12:25 PM)
But how does he find a pair of Dockers with a 16" inseam?

jbak (ID=14) (Sep 7, 2001 3:12:54 PM)
he's the only man I have ever seen wear cuff links to a football practice--he should fake humility with conviction also--it would help

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:13:12 PM)
Look, Cooke had the same ego, did the same grand entrances, had a wacky personal life, could be brusque with people, was opinionated, obnoxious, tyrannical, and a little wierd. Yet nobody gives him the same raft of crap that they give Snyder. He's become a carricature of himself and it'll take some doing to change it.

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:13:32 PM)
oops, 'gave' him the same raft of crap

John Keim (ID=17) (Sep 7, 2001 3:13:37 PM)
And yes the helicopter adds to his inflated self-importance. and wear a golf shirt every once in a while. everything seems so serious to him.

jbak (ID=14) (Sep 7, 2001 3:14:49 PM)
if john's gone--does anyone know--did Jerry Jones really have plastic surgery and lose 50 pounds--like some drug kingpin looking to hide out?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:14:59 PM)
Like it or not, a team's image around the league is often shaped by it's owner. They can modify that by winning consistently, but the owner is pretty important.

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:15:13 PM)
I'm back.. got cut off again for a moment

id (ID=13) (Sep 7, 2001 3:15:46 PM)
The point of difference with me is, JKC earned every penny of his money and I respected him for it. He knocked on doors as a kid selling everything. Dan was born with a silver spoon, got his first big money as a loan, then made a fortune in medical data bases, from it, correct, John?

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:15:52 PM)
if danny stays in the background and this team wins, his image will change. but if they struggle and he's out front again, it only cements the public's opinion.

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:17:25 PM)
don't think dan was born with a silver spoon. his dad worked for UPI--you didn't get rich that way. but dan was helped by others, like drasner, with big loans. he lost a lot of money in college, but they stuck by him and gave him more. but jkc did do pretty much everything on his own. the difference there now is this: this organization is centered more around marketing than on football. that's from a longtime employee who knows the difference.

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 3:18:02 PM)
blah blah Hey John what's up with Arrington's hair? Is he going for the Don King look?

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:18:11 PM)
KJC was an ornery bastard who happened to own the Skins and had the good fortune to inherit Beathard and hire Gibbs under Beathards recommendation. The press treated him with kid gloves because we were a winner then

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:18:28 PM)

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:19:08 PM)
It's just my perception (probably based on a lot of nothing) but I think Marty's a lot more comfortable with young guys. Is that part of his personality or is it cap considerations forcing him to use the kids. Would Ohalete or Pierce even get a look under the old regime?

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:19:36 PM)
A bunch of them are going for the don king look. it's the curls, or braids, they want. ....i don't know. i'm not hip enough

and donny green, and stephens, and brandt,

id (ID=13) (Sep 7, 2001 3:19:41 PM)
So, before you leave, give us your prediction for their ('Skins) final record, John. Is it .500, like mine?

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:19:57 PM)
jkc certainly was helped because they won. had they been losing under him, his perception would be different. but he hired people to do their jobs and left them alone. a lot to be said for that.

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:20:56 PM)
Marty wanted this team to get younger, which they have. both ohalete and pierce can help on special teams so they fit in. they would have made it at any time, given the talent level on this team. no one was cut for them who deserved to make it. eddie mason was cut in favor of donny green...

Terry (ID=16) (Sep 7, 2001 3:22:19 PM)
Will we see Boose sub for Bruce on any sort of rotational basis this year, or will Bruce go all the way as an every down player?

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:22:51 PM)
predictions? uh-oh. based off the preseason and the numerous questions i still have about this team--how long can bruce last, how effective will jeff be, can they stop the run (still doubt it), i'd have to say .500 at best. and i'm one of the more optimistic ones. i'm giving marty the benefit of the doubt, that he has yet to preside over an absolute disaster in nearly 15 years...but i'm struggling to see how they can inch above 7-9. and yet, to be wishy-washy, i could see them getting to 9-7 if EVERYTHING broke right...but that probably means no injuries to key players.

Norvitis (ID=12) (Sep 7, 2001 3:24:05 PM)
I'm looking for 6-10, probably 5-11.

John Keim (ID=20) (Sep 7, 2001 3:24:44 PM)
Boose will have to sub some, at least early, as bruce winds back into football shape. the redskins were concerned enough about bruce that they signed the two kids, bowens and leverette. and they've worked out kenard at end some...but boose would be the first guy there. aanother option, at least on passing downs, is to use lavar there. but i don't like him in this role. at least not yet

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 3:25:04 PM)

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:30:39 PM)
I've seen many predictions that have the Bolts beating up on us

Art (ID=24) (Sep 7, 2001 3:30:46 PM)
And where did Keim go. I wanted nuggets of wisdom :).

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:30:47 PM)

Any takers on the inside scoop on Jerry Jones transformation into Geraldo Escoabar

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:31:31 PM)
I'm not that ripe

Damn, that pic of Jerrah in SI is scary!!!!!

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:32:43 PM)
What game will Stephen Davis get hurt in?

MissingCenters37 (ID=19) (Sep 7, 2001 3:32:50 PM)
Most of the "pros" have the Skins losing this weekend, for whatever that's worth. I just think they WANT the Skins to lose to Norv than really thinking about the troubles they're having on their OLine.

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:33:20 PM)
but can I block these stupid annoying pop ups?

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:33:28 PM)
for the OLine question: I like the redskins matchups against SD's offense. their corners should shut down these wideouts and the Chargers line is worse off than Washington's. flutie will Have to run. the guy who worries me is TE Freddie Jones. could flourish in this offense.

jbak (ID=14) (Sep 7, 2001 3:33:51 PM)
who would cover f jones?

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 3:33:53 PM)
yes pay me Hogie 9.95 per chat and you won't see the sponsors

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:03 PM)

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:04 PM)
Most of the people in San Diego, at least the writers, are picking Washington. you're always more critical of the team you cover...

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:19 PM)
hogie has no money

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:31 PM)
Could be Sam Shade or Barber on Jones. AS we all know, Shade struggles in coverage.

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:32 PM)
very true

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:41 PM)
they should call him Brokie

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:34:49 PM)

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:14 PM)
yeah But Dan the man Marino says that George doesn't even want to play how do you answer that John J/K :)

MissingCenters37 (ID=19) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:30 PM)
John: Have you heard how they're going to use LaVar this weekend? Will he be blitzing more?

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:40 PM)
lavar would cover jones at times, too...

ChatMaster (ID=7) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:47 PM)
J/K = Just Kidding although Marino did say that

jbak (ID=14) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:52 PM)
that quote sounded more like Marino struggling(mightily) to be clever over accurate

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:35:57 PM)
George doesn't want to play?

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:36:07 PM)

Hogie (ID=23) (Sep 7, 2001 3:36:19 PM)
George can't draw plays in the dirt. LOL!!!

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:36:30 PM)
I heard that yesterday and have no reason to agree with him. I posted a response to this last night on the Ask John Keim segment. If George didn't want to play, he would have come out after that safety blitz last week. he was in obvious actually looks much more relaxed this year because he knows it's his team and his job.

MissingCenters37 (ID=19) (Sep 7, 2001 3:36:58 PM)
I think what he (Marino) meant by that was the fact the JG was getting was getting killed last weekend. JG DEFINITELY wants to play.

Skins (ID=22) (Sep 7, 2001 3:37:15 PM)
behind our line? who would?

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:37:23 PM)
I would imagine Lavar would blitz a decent amount. that's how he's used best. anytime he made plays this summer it came off a blitz. he needs to be moving and blow up plays rather than react...

MissingCenters37 (ID=19) (Sep 7, 2001 3:37:54 PM)
Are the coaches feeling confident in our OLine gelling? Good practices this week?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:38:34 PM)
John, is there reason for any optimism about the offensive line or is this all wishful thinking? If they can't pick up blitzes any better than during preseason, the season could go South real quick.

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:40:09 PM)
alrighty, so where is everybody?

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:40:34 PM)
Yes. they like that Szott is a veteran and knows the offense and that Samuels will play. also, jansen and raymer should help brandt. whether or not their optimism is based in reality, we'll see. there's some reason for optimism, but it's hard to imagine them gelling so quickly. Yes the blitzesmust be picked up, but it's not just the line. the backs must do well and the QB must make the right read, etc. on that safety blitz last week, George held onto the ball.. should have been a three-step drop and throw. had he done that, there's no collision.Folks, I have to call it a day. Got to pick the son off the bus

hedrew2 (ID=26) (Sep 7, 2001 3:40:37 PM)
don't know. Several questions asked about oline strength and acontinuity

John Keim (ID=25) (Sep 7, 2001 3:40:57 PM)
Thanks and we'll chat again next Friday......

Which offensive line would you rather have, the line we had in 1999, or this line?

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:42:31 PM)
Art, can I take the line I thought we'd have going into the season last year?

TennesseeCarl (ID=3) (Sep 7, 2001 3:42:34 PM)
Good chat...gotta get back to work. Later...

We all thought overly much for what we actually did have :).

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:43:55 PM)
Samuals, Jansen, Raymer, Tre, and SImms with Sammuals being the only new guy but having practiced together all preseason. THat would be my pick since I thought Tre was going t ocome back in shape like the year before.

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:44:10 PM)
and Heck as depth

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:45:31 PM)
ah well, so long as next year you don't ask if I'd take the line I think we have this year, because I need to be pleasantly surprised on that front.

gbear (ID=27) (Sep 7, 2001 3:48:16 PM)
to whoever set this up, The chat looks real nice. this is the first time I've been in the chat room since the switch to the new board.
