NFL Draft: Film review of Texas Christian wide receiver Josh Doctson

Breaking Burgundy Analyst Paul Conner shares his thoughts on a potential first round target those seeking a big receiving target.

Josh Doctson

Position: Wide Receiver

College: TCU

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 195

(Analysis of games vs. Kansas State, West Virginia, Texas)

Positives: Josh Doctson is a reliable target, who compiled 79 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns during his senior season. He has really good hands and an ability to climb the ladder to pluck the ball out of the air. With his size and good body control, Doctson can box out defenders and win jump-ball situations. He has good straight line speed. Doctson ran a lot of fly routes at TCU and was able to get by cornerbacks. When not running routes he is a willing blocker.

Concerns: Despite good long speed, Doctson owns slow feet. His breaks are not very smooth and he rounds off his routes. He doesn't sink his hips much and that could be a problem at the next level.

If drafted by Redskins: Kirk Cousins has talked about throwing up opportunity balls but the Redskins have lacked a target who can consistently win those for a long time. Doctson is raw but his ability to win jump ball situations in the red zone and on back shoulder throws is a great asset for a quarterback. It's too early to tell what the Redskins are going to be doing with their receiver position but adding weapons with a different skill set would help Cousins in his development going forward. Washington could think WR in round one and a bigger one at that if Pierre Garcon becomes a salary cap cut.
