The Robert Griffin III era officially over with the Redskins

The Redskins will release former starting QB Robert Griffin III Monday, according to a report.

We knew this was coming. Just a matter of when. According to a report, the when on Robert Griffin III's release is Monday.

The Redskins have until Wednesday to waive their former starting quarterback. Otherwise, Griffin, who didn't play a single snap last season, would be on the books for $16.1 million next season. That wasn't happening ever and certainly not after Washington placed the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins, who led the Redskins to the NFC East title last season.

The only real question involved whether the Redskins could work out a trade for the 2012 NFL Rookie of the Year. This seemed unlikely based on the contract situation. It would appear that avenue is now also closed.

Once released, Griffin will have suitors in a league light on viable quarterbacks. That doesn't mean RG3 is one, but perhaps a new situation turns his fortunes around. Houston, Los Angeles and the New York Jets are among the teams looking for starters while Dallas and Kansas City could use a long-term backup plan.

Depending on your take on all things Robert Griffin III, get your popcorn or earplugs ready. RG3 will be in the news for a while.
