NFL free agency officially opens this week. While the Redskins aren't expected to target high-priced talent, they need additions in several areas. Overall, money will be spent. Therefore, Breaking Burgundy turned to Insiders within Scout's NFL community for the scoop on various potential free agent options at areas of need for Washington. Check out our newest profile and the list of previous entries.
Position: Running back
Need: The Redskins let unrestricted free agent Alfred Morris--the team’s leading rusher in each of the past four seasons--walk. Matt Jones and third-down back Chris Thompson are the only locks to return. If veteran Pierre Thomas returns, questions as to how much he can produce still linger. Jones could use a complement for early-down work in the backfield.
Player: Bilal Powell
Former team: New York Jets
Age for 2016 season: 28 (10/27/1988)
Insider: Sean Deegan, Jets Insider
Powell is a multi-talented #2 back who was very productive as a Jet. He’s a guy that can break runs and also be a formidable receiver out of the backfield. Powell had over 700 combined yards of offense in 2015.
Take: Powell will start the season at 27 years old, and the Jets haven’t put a whole lot of mileage on him. His YPC has held steady or improved in each of the past four seasons. Things appear to be trending up for the 5-foot-10, 204-pound back. With 47 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns, Powell’s 2015 season was the best of his career in terms of receiving. If the Redskins were to sign Powell, he could potentially chip in to tackle some of the early down workload along with backfield duties in passing situations.
UPDATE: Just as we were posting this, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Powell staying with the Jets. There goes that.
