Report: Redskins agree to 1-year deal with Junior Galette

Galette missed all of last season with a torn Achilles, but vowed to stay in Washington. That's what he did.

The Redskins still haven't made a splashy move with outside free agents, but they locked up their most important one still remaining.

Washington agreed to terms on a one-year contract with pass rusher Junior Galette Wednesday. Pro Football Talk reported the two sides agreed on a one-year, $4 million contract.

Galette, who turns 28 on March 27, missed all of last season with a torn Achilles suffered in training camp shortly after agreeing to join Washington on a one-year deal following a buyout from the Saints related to several off-the-field incidents.

This agreement allows the Redskins to get a one-year look at the potentially potent defender while bolstering their edge pass rush with Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith. It also allows Galette a chance to rehabilitate his value for a lucrative multi-year contract.

The linebacker had 22 sacks in his last 32 games with New Orleans and 31.5 sacks.

Breaking Burgundy's Chris Russell wrote overnight that even though the Redskins held right-of-first-refusal on any contract Galette might sign, they would be wise to move quickly and not let him get away.

Even though he didn't play a snap all season, Galette stated, in words and body ink, that he intended on staying with the Redskins.

As for the bigger picture, the Redskins will have approximately $13.1 remaining under the salary cap based on numbers provided by the NFLPA. Washington's remaining wish list includes a nose tackle, veteran running back, safety, depth along both lines and possibly an inside linebacker.

The Redskins previously retained quarterback Kirk Cousins, quarterback Colt McCoy, running back Chris Thompson, linebacker Will Compton, safety Duke Ihenacho, punter Tress Way, linebacker Mason Foster and defensive lineman Kedric Golston among others. Defensive lineman Kendall Reyes and safety David Bruton are the lone outside free agents added
