The Redskins settled a meaningless debate by naming Jeff George as their starting quarterback Wednesday.

George had been benched in Sunday's 30-3 loss in favor of Tony Banks. Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer hinted at renaming George on Sunday night and Monday. But he wanted to let things cool down, then talk to George, before saying anything.

''While we have not been as effective offensively as we would like, there have been a number of things you can point to,'' Schottenheimer said. ''It doesn't revolve around one player. We've got a number of players who've got to perform better. We have to coach better.''

George, as he did Sunday and Monday, declined comment. He has not won any friends, on the team or in the media, by the way he handled this situation.
