Redskins' 2016 regular season schedule loaded with national games

The Washington Redskins schedule for the 2016 regular season is finally here. See full details below.

We knew the Redskins' 2016 opponents. Now we know the when and where Washington will face them with five juicy national spotlight contests. That doesn't even include the highly anticipated meeting against Robert Griffin III's new team.

Kirk Cousins and the NFC East champion Redskins will open the 2016 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field in the first of two Monday night appearances. One of their standard two regular season matchup against the Cowboys is set for Thanksgiving in Dallas after the rivals initially meet in Week 2. Washington and the Cincinnati Bengals will fly across the pond for a Week 8 game in London.

Staying in the AFC North, the Redskins and Browns meet Oct 2 at FedEx Field. Normally this would just be a garden variety matchup, but clearly that's not the case because this could mean a head-to-head battle between Cousins against Griffin, who spent his four NFL seasons as a member of the Redskins. If you haven't heard, both were drafted by the Redskins in 2012 with Griffin dominating early before injuries and approach hurt his cause. He didn't play a snap last season as Cousins rewrote the franchise's record books.

Six matchups pit the Redskins against against their three NFC East rivals (Cowboys, Giants, Eagles). Another four are against the NFC North, including a Sunday night game versus the Green Bay Packers, who vanquished Washington in the 2015-16 NFL playoffs. Another four games are versus the AFC North plus two against division winners. The Redskins and Carolina Panthers meet Week 15 on Monday night.
