Whether he was listening live or not to Darrell Green's radio interview Friday, Bashaud Breeland heard the message. More than that, the rising third-year cornerback embraced what the Hall of Famer and arguably all-time greatest Redskin said about him.
What did Green say? That Breeland isn't a number one corner, at least not yet.
The Washington Redskins' depth chart says as much. Free agent Josh Norman received a massive contract this offseason, which means more often than not he'll handle the likes of playmaking wide receivers Odell Beckham, Antonio Brown and A.J. Green this season.
"He is not number-one, and deservedly so," Green said about Breeland when he went in studio with "Grant and Danny" on 106.7 The Fan.
Breeland didn't enter 2015 as the top guy either after the Redskins signed free agent Chris Culliver, who was released soon after Norman's addition and the selection of third rounder Kendall Fuller in last month's NFL Draft. However, the former Clemson product took on those responsibilities at times and especially when Culliver went down with a season-ending injury.
"I thought that only until last year that he began to say, 'Hey, I am really gonna do something in this league," Green continued. "So if I'm him, I have a right [type] of madness on. There's a right way to be mad and say 'you know what, I'm gonna show them.'"
Later in the day, Breeland responded to Green via his Twitter account.
Green went on to say that the addition of Norman should provide Breeland with a true breakout opportunity
With Norman drawing all the attention, Green thinks it will provide Breeland with a great opportunity to break out.
"Play opposite this guy, and there's probably going to be more balls your way and you just go do his thing. This is a great opportunity for him. But no, he's not number-one. But he was great last year, now lets see him go do it again."
