The Monday After - New England

Ifeanyi Ohalete will start at safety this week, replacing David Terrell. But the Redskins say don't read too much into that: they just want to give Ohalete a shot at winning the job. We say: Terrell hasn't played well and the Redskins need to find someone who can.

. . . Ifeanyi Ohalete will start at safety this week, replacing David Terrell. But the Redskins say don't read too much into that: they just want to give Ohalete a shot at winning the job. We say: Terrell hasn't played well and the Redskins need to find someone who can. Ohalete worked with the first unit all day this afternoon.

Ohalete hasn't distinguished himself, either. But Ohalete said he's a changed player from last year, when he gambled way too much. It's part of his style, but that must change if he wants to win the job. He needs to make the right play rather than trying to make all the big plays.

. . . Champ Bailey's agent, Jack Reale, met with owner Dan Snyder last night. But Bailey wasn't exactly optimistic that anything would get done in the near future. When asked if he was optimistic, Bailey said, ''No comment.''

. . . QB Patrick Ramsey did not practice because of his swollen right hand. Steve Spurrier said Ramsey might not play Saturday, but won't know for certain until later in the week.

''I had trouble gripping the ball,'' Ramsey said. ''Rather than make it worse, I decided to sit out and let it heal. I hope to practice tomorrow and I expect to play Saturday.''

If he can't play, Rob Johnson would start.

. . . Also missing today: left tackle Chris Samuels, who had heat-related problems against New England. He expects to practice Tuesday. Jon Jansen took some snaps at left tackle, just in case. Jansen worked there a few plays last summer, too.

. . . Lennie Friedman will start at center ahead of Wilbert Brown this weekend. But Larry Moore is still expected back for the regular season opener against the Jets.

. . .The Redskins waived safety Rashidi Barnes and Brent Bartholomew today. Neither came as a surprise.

. . . Offensive lineman Rod Jones (ankle/toe) practiced today, working at left tackle. Receiver Darnerien McCants also practiced and should play Saturday. The Redskins did not practice in full pads, by the way.

. . . RG Randy Thomas (ankle) did not practice.

. . . David Leaverton punted in practice today, but did not kick as well as veteran Bryan Barker. Leaverton takes only two steps (compared to 2 1/2 for Barker) to get his punts off, but Barker gets it off quicker. Leaverton does not start moving until after he catches the ball; Barker starts his motion as he catches the ball.

. . . Bernard Holsey took over for Brandon Noble at nose guard today, but don't think that will last long. As of this minute, there's nothing new to report on the trade for Lional Dalton.

In pass rush situations the Redskins will go with this lineup: LE Regan Upshaw, LT Renaldo Wynn, RT Peppi Zellner, RE Bruce Smith. At least they'll use that some of the time. They also used Zellner at nose in a 3-4 set.

. . . For you Tre Johnson fans: the Big Fella is still running with a limp because of his sore Achilles. I have a hard time seeing him make the final roster, unfortunately. Johnson has been fun to cover.
