The Redskins have a chance to turn things around quickly:
For the first time since maybe naming QB Kirk Cousins starter prior to the season in 2015, drama has returned to Washington this week. Leaks, reports of locker room discontent. Former player(s) fanning flames. Much of the outside noise can be silenced. How? Win football games.
Washington faced adversity record-wise last season several times and ultimately overcame it all by going on a four game win streak in December that made them division champs. While they faced some lows in 2015, the level of drama never really reached a great height. On the surface, there didn't appear to be much tension in the locker room thanks to the veteran leadership of guys like Ricky Jean-Francois and former Redskins DL Terrance Knighton.
Yet, former teammate Keenan Robinson who now plays for the New York Giants suggested there was internal drama during his tenure with the team. "Once the Redskins get down, they start pointing fingers," said Robinson to New York media on Tuesday.
Robinson's perspective was widely denied by not only his former Redskins teammates, but head coach Jay Gruden. "I didn’t see any finger-pointing to that magnitude that he’s talking about," Gruden said in his Wednesday presser. "I thought we handled it extremely well. I think we’ve handled it well so far this year and we’re going to continue to handle it the best way we can."
The good news is, if Washington is able to beat the Giants in New York Sunday, they'll come home to a favorable match-up against the Cleveland Browns. They have a chance to put ice on the emerging flames and revive their season. If they're able to finish the month with a 2-2 record, that would indeed be a nightmare-saving scenario.
