Morning Manny: Has Jamison Crowder Become More Than Just A Slot WR?

Jamsion Crowder is becoming more than just a slot receiver.

Manny Benton often tweets random thoughts regarding the Washington Redskins at random times of the day that typically bring interesting dialog. Now from Monday through Thursday at around 9 a.m., you can find those Twitter-sized thoughts in "Morning Manny." Complete with explanations!

WR Jamison Crowder has become Washington's new (more-than-a) safety blanket on offense:

Heading into the regular season, it was widely expected that TE Jordan Reed would be the Washington Redskins' lead dog on offense. While he's shown no reason to change those expectations, second year WR Jamison Crowder has quickly emerged as a key piece to this offense. In three weeks of play, the former Duke Blue Devils receiver is tied with Reed for the most targets (25) on the team. Crowder also leads the team with two receiving touchdowns -- really he should have more than that. Not to mention, he's tied for second in the entire NFL with 7 red zone targets. Jordan Reed only has three red zone targets.

Last season, Crowder popped up each week on film. He was open deep at least two times a game and the Redskins rarely looked his way. I think they saw that on film and have decided to use him more. Crowder is beyond his years as a route runner. His feet are impeccable. The guy is flashing big time so far this season.

Jamison Crowder is becoming more than just a "slot wide receiver." I'm reminded of a very interesting take in November 2014 by NFL Network's Bucky Brooks, who happens to be good friends with GM Scot McCloughan: "After taking an extended look at Duke senior WR Jamison Crowder against North Carolina, I believe scouts around the league would be wise to use Pro Bowl WR Antonio Brown as the pro comparison in meetings."

No, I'm not using that quote to suggest Crowder is the next Antonio Brown. I'm using it to say that he could be a bit more than what many expected him to be. He's not just a slot receiver. Crowder is growing before our eyes and quickly becoming one of the most explosive assets on the team.
