Morning Manny: Signature Win Time for Kirk Cousins, Jay Gruden

The Redskins play at the Ravens on Sunday. Here's why this win could be more than the next W.

Manny Benton often tweets random thoughts regarding the Washington Redskins at random times of the day that typically bring interesting dialog. Now from Monday through Thursday at around 9 a.m., you can find those Twitter-sized thoughts in "Morning Manny." Complete with explanations!

Head Coach Jay Gruden and QB Kirk Cousins have an opportunity to get a signature win Sunday

Since becoming a QB/HC duo, Cousins and Gruden really don't have a signature win. To this point, their most memorable victory came against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season when the Redskins won at home 31-30, after entering halftime trailing 24-0. It was the game that birthed, "You like that!" But need we be reminded that the Buccaneers were 2-5 with a rookie quarterback and a terrible defense.

A win is a win, they say. But not here in Washington, where everything gets scrutinized. That's especially so when you've paid a first-time head coach top dollar and are considering doing the same with the quarterback. So far, the tandem is known for mediocre wins, but that could change Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

In all honesty, the Redskins do not match up well in this game. The Ravens are not a team that loses at home often. Although they suffered a tough one-point loss to the Raiders in Week 4, all that does is make things more difficult for Washington. Losing two consecutive games at home is not the Baltimore way. This will also be the toughest defense Washington has faced to date; the 3-1 Ravens have allowed the fewest yards per game (256). It will be a true test for Cousins and Co.

Having said that, this game has a winnable feel to it. The Ravens have a banged-up offensive line and allowed Raiders QB Derek Carr to throw four touchdowns just last week. I say that without discrediting how great of a quarterback Carr is actually becoming this season. But as much as that was a big win for Carr, it can be the same for two particular Redskins. A win in this key showdown could really boost the perceptions of Cousins and Gruden.
