Redskins' defensive third down woes end in Baltimore:
In the first four games of the season, Washington's defense was playing historically bad football on third down. Opposing offenses had a 57.7% success rate against the team on that down. The Redskins were simply unable to get off the field. But that all changed on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens who were limited to only converting 3 out of 15 third down attempts. All three of those conversions came in the first half. It was an incredible turnaround for the team.
Washington's success on that down against the Ravens was a big reason the team won. It definitely will help the naysayers back-off on the negativity towards Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry. "Joe B. is a good coach -- sometimes we just have to play better" Redskins' LB Will Compton said in the locker room post-game.
Compton credits the success on third down to execution. "That's what it came down to weeks past -- executing," he said. "Guys were sometimes not doing their assignment, but this week everyone was clicking on all cylinders. We competed to get to the ball and got off on third downs. It truly was execution."
Compton went on to attribute the lack of third down success more so to the mental aspect of the game. He said that it's all about being disciplined and understanding your assignment.
