Morning Manny: Expect An Aggressive Mentality With Greg Manusky As Defensive Coordinator

Greg Manusky, known as a wild-man of a player, now brings his aggressive mentality to the Redskins' defense.

Manny Benton often tweets random thoughts regarding the Washington Redskins at random times of the day that typically bring interesting dialog. Now from Monday through Thursday around 9 a.m., you can find those Twitter-sized thoughts in "Morning Manny." Complete with explanations!

Greg Manusky likes an aggressive defense

Gone are the days of vanilla blitzing schemes and cornerbacks playing 20 yards off-the-ball. At least, that's what I expect moving forward for the Washington Redskinswith former outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky now manning the entire defense. Based on what I've heard about Manusky, he's a guy who likes his corners to be physical and his pass rushers to pass rush. I'd expect more usage of press coverage, which should benefit a guy like Bashaud Breeland. Not to mention, a lot more exotic blitz looks.

I didn't hate the idea of promoting Manusky as explained early in the defensive coordinator interview process. Mostly because I watched him closely during training camp as he coached-up the outside linebackers. Of all the defensive coaches, Manusky was the one who stood out to me the most. He's a disciplinarian who emphasizes technique. He came across as being a straight shooter with a sense of humor when I spoke with him. He's a guy players like and respect.

In 2016, Manusky helped coach Ryan Kerrigan to his first Pro Bowl since 2012 and was a big reason for Trent Murphy's career season with nine sacks). I was also told by one player after a game this season that Manusky was very instrumental in forming blitz packages for the Redskins' linebacker unit under former defensive coordinator Joe Barry. So he had some success with development of players and scheming.

Of course, he's had three other defensive coordinating gigs in the past (49ers, Chargers and Colts) and statistically never coached a top unit. But that shouldn't take away from the fact that he's a more than capable coach to help Washington's defense grow as a unit. I'm not saying he's a legit solution to the team's defensive woes. But I like his aggressive mentality and ability to connect with players.
