Redskins, OT Morgan Moses Agree On Massive 5-Year Contract Extension

The Redskins reportedly agreed to a long-term extension with their starting right tackle.

Big contract extension news involving the Washington Redskins on draft day. No, not that contract extension, but one involving a key blocker for Kirk Cousins.

The Redskins have agreed to a five-year contract extension with starting right tackle Morgan Moses, the team announced Thursday evening ahead of the 2017 NFL Draft.

This move is huge for a few reasons. Moses, a former third-round pick out of Virginia, was among more than two dozen players slated to enter free agency next season. That group includes center Spencer Long. With Moses locked in, the Redskins now have both of their tackle spots secured with Trent Williams on the left side plus right guard and Pro Bowl selection Brandon Scherff. Moses started all 16 games in each of the last two seasons.

“I look back at the past three years and being here and just being blessed to play here – and I look back at three years ago where I was at the draft – to be here where I’m one of the first guys in my class to sign a big extension, it just shows you that if you stay blessed and you stay true to your process, anything can happen,” Moses said. “It’s a big deal for me to be here because I have so many things in the community that are working for me and for others here, so to be here and be hands-on with it, it’s going to allow me to do some great things.”

Moses has room to grow, but has improved significantly since entering the league in 2014.

"Morgan Moses didn’t start his first year, you know, but he’s come on to be one of the best right tackles in the league," Redskins Director of College Scouting Scott Campbell said Monday when discussing the idea of judging draft classes immediately. "That’s my opinion anyway. It takes time to develop."

We'll need to see more details on the contract itself before judging if the terms are good for the Redskins. Ensuring their set at right tackle for the foreseeable future is a good thing.
