In a first-round that saw numerous teams reaching up for offensive players, the Washington Redskins had perhaps one of the best lineman in the draft fall to them at pick No. 17.
The Washington Redskins needed defensive linemen, badly. Problem: None worthy of the 17th overall selection figured to be there.
Solution: The other teams let Jonathan Allen slide by -- and the Redskins pounced. Here's the 411 on Washington's 2017 first-round pick.
Who: Jonathan Allen
Position: Defensive end
Height/weight: 6'3" 291 pounds
Bio: Winner of the 2016 Chuck Bednarik and Bronco Nagurski Awards as the nation's top defender. ... Allen was also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. The Leesburg, VA native grew up near Redskins Park. ... NFL Draft Mike Mayock analyst ranked Allen the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2017 class.
Allen was part of a defensive line unit that anchored the best defense in all of college football in 2016. The Crimson Tide defense held opponents to a stingy 248 yards per game, playing in their second-straight College Football Playoff National Championship game. Allen combined for nine total tackles and three sacks and tackles for loss in two national championship games. The Crimson Tide won a national championship in 2015.
From 2014-2016, the Crimson Tide defense finished 11th, second and first in the country in yards per game allowed.
Concerns: Part of the reason Allen may have fallen all the way to 17th is because of how good the Crimson Tide defense was around him. Another concern is Allen's shoulders, both of which he has had surgery on to fix labral tears. He did not miss a game his entire senior year due to injury.
Stats: in three seasons as a starter (43 games), Allen totaled 41.5 tackles for loss, 27.5 sacks, 137 tackles and three fumble recoveries. He notched a tackle for loss in all but three games in 2016.
Redskins' current depth chart: Stacy McGee, Anthony Lanier (LDE), Terrell McClain, Matt Ioannidis, A.J. Francis (RDE).
