Rookie Matchups: San Francisco gets offensive minded coach lots of defenders

Kyle Shannahan got his new toys in free agency; San Francisco addressed their defense through the draft.

The NFL Draft is over and the work to get all the rookies ready for the NFL begins. For the Washington Redskins that means first round pick Jonathan Allen and nine other players selected in the 2017 draft. The same scenario exists for the other 31 NFL teams of which the Redskins will face 13 including each NFC East rival twice. Let's begin taking a look at the interesting matchups and scenarios involving the new guys.

Who: San Francisco 49ers

When: Week 6: Sunday, October 15 at 1 pm on FOX

Where: FedEx Field

Interesting rookies:

* 2nd round -- Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

* 3rd round -- Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama

* 4th round -- Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado

Major matchup:  Thomas shot up team's draft boards as the yearly event approached after being mocked to go as low as Washington at 17th overall. Thomas could play inside or out on the 49ers 4-3 defensive front and will join a good, young core with DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead who were each first-round picks in the previous two years, respectively. Washington's offensive lineman and possibly Morgan Moses, especially, will have their hands full when they face their former offensive coordinator.

Keep an eye on: Another prospect that was linked to the Redskins early in the mocking process, Foster saw his stock fall dramatically when he failed a drug test due to a diluted sample and got into a reported heated exchange with a hospital worker. Should he keep his off the field demons in the past, the 49ers will have executed a coup to get his talents so late in the first round, 31st overall. Foster's size, 5-foot-11, keeps him from likely taking on bigger targets like Jordan Reed in the passing game, but he will be a huge factor limiting running backs on both the ground and through the air as he has elite instincts and athleticism.

Don't forget: In a fairly young secondary, Witherspoon has a chance to earn immediate starting playing time. At 6-foot-3, he has the ability to high point the football with the tallest of receivers, which makes a match up with the 6-foot-5 Terrelle Pryor possible and intriguing for both sides.
