Ask Matt Bowen

Remember when I answered the question about the Cubs either being out of it or having it clinched by Sunday? I was wrong. I'm going to have to ask the scoreboard operators to flash the score every once in a while. Seriously, thanks again for the questions. I'm sorry I can't answer all of them.

Q: Yet another mishap at practice involving you, and another player. My question to you is, "Are the coaches getting on you about the collisions, or are they recognizing that it's just your excellent work ethic that carries you into those type of situations?"
A: It's just two guys practicing hard. Mistakes happen. The coaches haven't said anything. Editor's note: Witnesses said Bowen pulled up during the collision with Fred Smoot and that it wasn't the safety's fault.

Q: At what age did you start playing football, and how have your parents influenced and supported you between then and now?
A: I started in the fourth grade after the Bears won the Super Bowl. My parents supported me by letting me make my own decisions. They never pushed me in any direction. They let me do my own thing and make my own choices.

Q: At what age is it best for a kid to start football?
A: Football isn't for everyone. There's not a perfect age. You just know when you're ready. But you have to be a tough kid to play.

Q: With Champ and Smoot at the corner and our line not being Pro Bowl caliber why do you think we don't blitz more?
A: I think the D-line is doing a good job. Teams are trying to counterattack our quality corners by throwing quick and not letting them get into their routes. They know when they get into their routes that our guys will shut them down. And if you blitz too much, no one's perfect and you will make mistakes and someone will be open.

Q: I think we have a good chance of winning the division so bring the pain, Matt. Let's crush 'em.
A: I will.

Q: What overtime system do you like better? I'm okay with the pro's, but that Ohio State/NC State game was great drama. I'd like to see something like it make it to the NFL.
A: Yeah, it's great drama. But in college you take the kicking game out of it. That's part of the game. I don't know if there's an equal way to do it. It's just the flip of a coin. But we pinned them on the 6. If we stop them the kicking game gets involved and maybe Chad takes it to the house. I think it's fine how it is.

Q: How long does it take you to recover from a loss?
A: A Day. That's why the league is so cool because you get to watch the tape on Monday, recover on Tuesday and then on Wednesday you're talking about the next game. Sure the losses keep me from sleeping sometimes. But the worst is to have a losing season because then you think about it all off-season.
