Gibbs said that Ramsey would enter next season as the starter, an obvious decision given his play over the past five games compared to Mark Brunell's. And Gibbs said he's happy with his quarterback trio, including No. 3 Tim Hasselbeck.
''Patrick has earned the right,'' Gibbs said. ''I'm reluctant to pull guys in and out. I give them a shot and he stays in until something happens.''
Ramsey has guided Washington to a 2-3 record in his five starts, receiving mixed reviews. There's no doubt the Redskins have moved the ball better with him, but they still struggle to score, except for one game against the struggling Giants.
Gibbs said he doesn't regret waiting nine games to make the switch.
''Everyone else might have a different opinion, but I wouldn't change it,'' Gibbs said.
. . . Corner Shawn Springs will practice Wednesday and trainer Bubba Tyer said he anticipates him playing against Dallas on Sunday. Springs missed the Niners game because of a concussion suffered the previous game against Philadephia.
Playoff fever isn't rampant at Redskins Park. Or anywhere else around Washington for that matter.
But the Redskins (5-9) have put themselves back into playoff contention, an indicator of how weak the NFC has become. Under one scenario, the Redskins could end up controlling their own destiny if they beat Dallas Sunday.
If the Redskins win, here's what else needs to happen for them to gain control: Philadelphia beats St. Louis; Atlanta beats New Orleans; Cincinnati beats the Giants and Tampa Bay beats Carolina. If all this hapens, Washington would enter the season finale against Minnesota controlling its destiny. Unbelievable as that might sound.
If they finish 7-9, the Redskins own tiebreakers over Chicago, Detroit and Tampa Bay based on having beaten them. They would own a tiebreaker over Arizona based on a better NFC record. They would also finish with a better NFC record than Carolina.
But if the Redskins win, they would still be eliminated if Carolina, New Orleans, St. Louis and Seattle all win.
