The Redskins added another veteran safety to their roster today, signing Cory Hall, formerly of the Falcons, to a one-year, $565,000 contract.
Hall, 28, has started 70 games is six NFL seasons, four in Cincinnati and the last two with the Atlanta Falcons. What he lacks in instincts he makes up for with intensity. He's considered to be a good blitzer, a plus is Gregg Williams' system.
He was close to signing with the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago, where he would have competed for the starting spot at free safety next to Roy Williams.
It is not clear what Hall's role with the Redskins will be or even if he will be on the roster on opening day. The Redskins signed Pierson Prioleau from the Bills in March and they now have five safeties who have started at least 10 NFL games. In addition to Prioleau and now Hall there are Sean Taylor, Matt Bowen, and Ryan Clark. Also in the mix is Andre Lott, a converted corner who was the team's fifth-round pick in 2002.
It's unlikely that the team will be able to keep more than four at the safety spot. Prioleau, who was signed to bolster Washington's special teams, and Taylor are certain to be there opening day. Bowen is recovering nicely from the ACL injury he suffered last season and seems to be safe despite a $1 million salary. That leaves the other three competing for one roster spot.
