The Cap Swami's Rookie Contract Prediction

A lot of talk around the quiet time of the off season centers around the signing of the draft picks and specifically what kind of contract they will get. WarpathInsiders' resident capologist gives his Swami-like predictions on the rookie contracts.

CB Carlos Rogers – 1st round – 9th pick overall
Using the contracts of DeAngelo Hall and Dunta Robinson from the 2004 draft (selected at #8 and #10 respectively) I predict that Rogers will get a deal close to this:

Six year deal worth around $12.750m in base total. This includes a $4.750m signing bonus and a $4.5m option bonus due in 2006 (which triggers the last – the sixth year - of the contract, which can ultimately be voided if certain performance criteria are met). The deal will also include base salary escalators that could push the overall value up to around $19m.

He would have initial base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k, $510k, $650k, $715k and reporting bonuses of $175k in years 2006-2009.

QB Jason Campbell – 1st round – 25th pick overall
Using the JP Losman contract from 2004 (selected at #22) I predict that Campbell will get a deal close to this:

Six year deal worth around $8.2m in base total. This includes a $2.5m signing bonus, a $1.750m option bonus due in 2006 (which triggers the last – the sixth year – of the contract, which can ultimately be voided if certain performance criteria are met), and a $1.0m roster bonus due in 2007. The deal will also include base salary escalators that could push the overall value up to around $25m.

He would have initial base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k, $465k, $550k, $610k and reporting bonuses of $100k in 2006-2009.

RB/H-Back Manuel White – 4th round – 120th pick overall
Three year deal worth around $1.240m in total. This includes a $315k signing bonus. He would have base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k.

LB Robert McCune – 5th round – 154th pick overall
Three year deal worth around $1.057m in total. This includes a $132k signing bonus. He would have base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k.

LB Jared Newberry – 6th round – 183rd pick overall
Three year deal worth around $1.009m in total. This includes a $84k signing bonus. He would have base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k.

RB Nehemiah Broughton – 7th round – 222nd pick overall

Three year deal worth around $0.955m in total. This includes a $30k signing bonus. He would have base salaries of $230k, $310k, $385k.

* Note : the Redskins could try to sign these last four mid-lower round picks to four year deals – a practice a number of other teams have adopted increasingly over the past few years
