1. Will RB Clinton Portis improve from last year's disappointing numbers?
scout.com: He had his lowest rushing totals as well as his lowest touchdown total (7-five rushing, two receiving) in his young career last season, his first with the Redskins. He also had his lowest rush per carry.
There isn't any question that the loss of RT Jon Jansen all season hurt. With him returning, running on the right side should certainly be easier. However, with shaky quarterback play, teams were loading the box with eight man fronts. For Portis to find consistent running room, QB Patrick Ramsey will have to play better.
With Jansen back in the fold, we see Portis improving on last year's disappointing numbers but whether he should be selected as your first fantasy back is up for debate.
2. Are any of their wide receivers worth drafting?
scout.com: At one time, both of their starting wide receivers were viable fantasy starters (Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner). Coles has been traded and Gardner is expected to be released or traded before the season starts.
Santana Moss, who was acquired in the Coles deal, will take over the top role. Head coach Joe Gibbs says they will open up the offense and that should take advantage of Moss's ability as a vertical threat. However, with a shaky quarterback situation still on the horizon, Moss probably is a marginal fantasy starter on paper this season.
Taylor Jacobs and David Patten are contesting for the other job. Neither looks to be worthy of starter status and probably should be drafted late if at all. It's Coles who has the only real value at the wide receiver position for the team.
3. Is TE Chris Cooley worth drafting as a fantasy starter?
scout.com: Cooley's production was a nice surprise last season. Part of it was because they went with such a short passing game. But it became clear they lacked a physical presence in the passing game, especially in the red zone area. That's where he made his mark (scored six times there).
Cooley is clearly a big part of their passing attack and he should build on that in his second season. Look for him to improve on last years numbers (37-314-6) and to be a decent fantasy starter.
4. Is QB Patrick Ramsey worth drafting?
scout.com: At one point early in his career, Ramsey showed some nice potential. However, former head coach Steve Spurrier's offense wasn't a good match for him and he hasn't been the same since.
Ramsey's on such shaky ground that the team spent a first-round pick on a quarterback in this year's draft. That tells us that Ramsey could be a few bad games away from losing his job.
The bottom line is we would shy away from drafting him this season and look for a quarterback in a more stable situation.
5. Is their fantasy defense worth drafting as a starter if S Sean Taylor isn't with the team this season?
scout.com: Their fantasy defense was pretty solid in points against and that's an area where Taylor would help against the pass and keeping the big plays down.
They were in the lower half in turnovers recorded and were average in sacks last season so if Taylor is convicted on charges filed by state prosecutors for allegedly pointing a gun during a dispute over an all-terrain vehicle and is not with the team this season, their fantasy defense wouldn't be worth drafting probably at all.
