NFC East Inside Slant

A look at the personnel of the Redskins divison rivals and some of the issues that are facing the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles as they go to training camp.

Dallas Cowboys

INSIDE SLANT

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will not predict the Super Bowl for this year's team.

Don't doubt that the Super Bowl is not on his mind, considering the number of moves and changes the Cowboys made in the offseason. He didn't spend more than $32 million in signing bonuses alone to add five free agents just improve off of last year's 6-10 team. He wants to compete with the Eagles for the NFC East and conference title.

Jones believes the Cowboys have made significant strides in doing so with their offseason moves. He likes the team's added depth. And he really likes the addition of Drew Bledsoe at quarterback.

As a result, Jones has few concerns about the Cowboys going into training.

His biggest concerns have to do with the switch from the 4-3 to the 3-4 defense, which will force the Cowboys to be reliant on several young players to step up -- namely rookie top picks Marcus Spears and linebacker Demarcus Ware, who must have immediate impacts at defensive end and rush linebacker, respectively.

The switch also forces a number of veterans to learn a different scheme and play in something they are not quite comfortable with.

That in essence is the genesis if defensive Greg Ellis' concerns about his future with the Cowboys.

The former No. 1 in 1998 who has led the team in sacks the past four seasons says he's not big enough at 270 pounds to be successful in 3-4 defense for a long period of time.

Ellis feels that way despite efforts from Cowboys coach Bill Parcells and Jones to convince him otherwise.

Parcells believes he can do it because he plans to cut Ellis' playing time to about 60 snaps a game, which will lessen the wear and tear on his body and keep him fresher for late in games and late in the season. It could conceivably extend his career.

Jones understands Ellis' concern but said his future with the Cowboys is secure.

"He is an integral part of our future," Jones said. "Bill (Parcells) and I are in the same place on that."

Ellis, however, remains realistic. He knows anything can happen.

Still Ellis plans to give his all to make the Cowboys winners again in 2005.

CAMP CALENDAR: Players report to camp July 28; the first practice is set for July 30; camp ends Aug. 21.

NOTES, QUOTES

--Known as the "Triplets," Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin will be forever linked in Cowboys lore because of their contributions to arguably the most successful decade in franchise history.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made simply it official.

The Cowboys will induct Aikman, Smith and Irvin in the team's hallowed Ring of Honor during a game this season on Sept. 19 during halftime of the club's Monday night game against rival Washington.

"They are so unique individually and in their accomplishments," Jones said. "To be inducted as a threesome gives us one of the most unique opportunities of any sporting team or franchise that they've ever had. These men are all destined for the NFL Hall of Fame. They will be there."

The threesome will be the 13th, 14th and 15th members of the Ring of Honor -- and the first of the Jones era, which began in 1989.

Considering that the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in 1990s -- with Aikman at quarterback, Smith at running back and Irvin at receiver and serving as the heart and soul of the franchise -- it should be no other way.

"What we shared and what we were able to accomplish on that football field was something unbelievable," Smith said.

The trio joined the Cowboys as first-round draft choices in 1988 (Irvin), 1989 (Aikman) and 1990 (Smith). Individually, they developed into three of the greatest players in franchise history.

"It's cherry on the pie going in that ring with my two special friends," Irvin said.

Said Aikman: "It's the way that it should be. We are the Triplets. We're identified as such. I feel wholeheartedly that our success was linked together in so many different ways."

The "Triplets" helped the Cowboys become the Team of the 90's, winning three Super Bowls in a four-year span (1992-95) and six NFC East titles in seven years.

Now they will be forever etched as a threesome on the facade at Texas Stadium.

NEW YORK GIANTS

When you look at the Giants' wide receiving situation, it's hard to give it too many quality points.

But, on the other hand, why not?

Returning is veteran split end Amani Toomer, back for his 11th season with the team, the only one for which he has ever played in the NFL. He is at or near the top in every all-time franchise receiving category, and despite not catching a touchdown pass for the first season since his rookie year (when he had exactly one reception), he did haul in 51 of them for 747 yards, a team-leading yardage total.

Toomer played all of last season with a nagging hamstring and groin injury, and although he didn't complain, he missed only the final game of the year.

He's back, and he's healthy.

The slot receiver is the newly-signed free agent from Pittsburgh, Plaxico Burress. He blends size (6-5, 226) and unrealistic speed (4.42) with sure hands and a tough mentality. He is also only 27 years old and the Giants are depending on him to spark a new, electrified offense led by young Eli Manning at quarterback.

There is more, too. If speed kills, then the Giants are going to seriously damage opposing defenses. Among those coach Tom Coughlin can choose is Tim Carter, who hasn't had a healthy season in he three he's been with the team since he was drafted in the second round, but he has flashed signs of toughness, great hands and phenomenal speed. He is, at least for now, healthy.

There is last year's rookie, Jamaar Taylor, who was a bit of a risk in the sixth round since he had undergone knee surgery in October at Texas A&M. Before that, he was being talked about as a possible first- or second-round selection. Again, blazing speed is his forte.

There is also David Tyree, who was drafted as a special teams specialist but who has shown great acceleration in his learning curve as a split end.

"I don't think I'm going to want for receivers," Manning said over the spring. "Besides, I intend to get the ball to Jeremy [TE Jeremy Shockey] quite a lot, too."

Things are, indeed, looking up.

CAMP CALENDAR: Giants' training camp opens July 30 in Albany, N.Y., on the campus of the University at Albany. ... There will be two practices on Saturday, Aug. 6, in conjunction with the visiting New York Jets. Camp will close on Aug. 24.

NOTES, QUOTES

--The Giants are determined to keep three tight ends this season, but seem to have broken down the attributes this time around. They want one pure (and dangerous) receiver, which would be starter and two-time Pro Bowl performer Jeremy Shockey. They want one who can be used both as a receiver and a blocker, which might translate into second-teamer Visanthe Shiancoe. Then the third, evidently, is going to be a pure blocker, and there are two in the running -- Chris Luzar, 6-7 and 265; and Darius Williams, 6-7 and 270. Luzar has more experience (two years in Jacksonville) but Williams, an undrafted rookie from Georgia Tech, was impressive in minicamp.

TE coach Mike Pope looks at the competition with a somewhat jaundiced eye. "I have had tight ends who were outstanding at both jobs," he said, referring to receiving and blocking. "I would have to say the best were Mark Bavaro, Ben Coates, Tony McGee and Jeremy."

--Rookie CB Corey Webster, a second-round draft choice, will be used as a punt returner, assuming he can handle the job in training camp. He did execute that protocol at LSU and did well enough at it to interest the coaching staff and special teams guru Mike Sweatman. "I like what I see of his quickness and speed," Sweatman said. "And you can see that he's tough."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I need to do a better job of getting more production out of the tight end position. As far as [Jeremy] Shockey and all the blocking he did is concerned, we had to pick up the blitz one way or another. But I am aware we need to get him more involved in the passing part of the game, too." --Giants offensive coordinator John Hufnagel.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

INSIDE SLANT

With the start of training camp only a week away, the situation between the Eagles and wide receiver Terrell Owens has turned combustible.

Owens, who wants his one-year-old, seven-year/$48.97 million contract renegotiated, warned, "It's not going to be a good situation," if he shows up without a new deal. The Pro Bowler also suggested that if the Eagles aren't going to redo his contract, they should trade him.

"If I don't report to camp, then . . . they're going to hit me with a bunch of fines so they can try to get in my pocket," Owens said. "I've talked to the coach (Andy Reid), and like I said, if I gotta come there (without a new deal), it's not going to be a good situation. So I just want something to be rectified and we can just move on."

Earlier, Eagles president Joe Banner said he had no idea whether Owens would show up on time for the start of camp.

"If we were dealing with somebody who was looking at this logically and was going to come to a common-sense conclusion, you'd say (he'll report)," Banner said. "But you're dealing with two people (Owens and agent Drew Rosenhaus) here who, frankly, don't think in common-sense terms.

"Anything can happen. They're not going to necessarily do what makes sense."

If Owens doesn't report to camp, he'll be fined $9,500 per day for each day he's out. The Eagles also can reclaim $1.87 million of his signing bonus if he doesn't report on time.

Said Owens: "If (Banner) feels that way then get rid of me. He wants to talk about Drew and I. If we're problems, then . . . trade me, release me. And we can just part ways like adults.

"What it all boils down to is I'm going to do what's best for my family. I don't even have to play for the Eagles, to be honest. I can go play with any other team and still be productive."

CAMP CALENDAR: Rookies are scheduled to report to Lehigh on July 28. The team's first full-squad practice will be on August 2. The Eagles will break camp at Lehigh on Aug. 14, the day before their first preseason game against Pittsburgh. They'll resume two-a-day workouts after the Steelers game at their south Philadelphia practice facility.

NOTES, QUOTES

--The Eagles are optimistic that they'll get all 11 of their draft picks signed before the start of training camp next Friday. Third-round running back Ryan Moats and fifth-round defensive end Trent Cole became the fifth and sixth draft choices to agree to terms.

The team's top three picks -- first-round defensive tackle Mike Patterson, second-round wide receiver Reggie Brown and second-round linebacker Matt McCoy -- are among the five unsigned players. But club president Joe Banner is hopes that all three will be signed in the next few days.

"I'm not concerned," he said. "We're in discussion with all of our picks. The tone of the conversations have been very constructive."

The Eagles have a $4.7 rookie pool allotment, the seventh highest in the league, because of their large number of picks. Banner feels that's more than enough to get all 11 picks signed without running out of pool money.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If we were dealing with somebody who was looking at this logically and was going to come to a common-sense conclusion, you'd say (Terrell Owens will report).

But you're dealing with two people (Owens and agent Drew Rosenhaus) here who, frankly, don't think in common-sense terms." --Eagles president Joe Banner.
