Punter Tom Tupa, whose 2004 performance was considered by many to be of Pro Bowl caliber, was placed on the injured reserve list by the Redskins today. He sustained a back injury in the pregame warm-ups before the last Friday's preseason game against Cincinnati. The move means that he will not play for the Redskins this season.
The 17-year veteran had one of his finest seasons last year, averaging 44.1 yards a punt with a net of 35.2. He ranked among the league leaders in both categories.
The move means that either Andy Groom, a first-year punter with a booming leg or Chris Mohr, another veteran, will handle both the punting and placekick holding duties for the Redskins this year.
Kicked Out: Tupa to IR
