Intelligence Brief: Redskins vs. Chiefs

WarpathInsider.com Editor-in-Chief Rich Tandler and the Publisher of Scout.com's Chiefs site WarpaintIllustrated.com Nick Athan exchanged questions and answers about the teams that they cover.

Warpaint: Compare the current members of the Redskins offensive line to the those great lines affectionately knows as the Hogs in the 80's and early 90's.
WarpathInsiders.com--There's no comparison as of yet; they simply have not accomplished enough as a group to warrant being mentioned in the same Hog's breath as Grimm, Jacoby, et al. That being said, they have been performing well and improving as the year has gone on. The bookend tackles, Chris Samuels on the left and Jon Jansen on the right, are as good a pair as you'll find anywhere. Randy Thomas is a solid performer at RG. Casey Rabach, the center acquired as a free agent, has struggled at times but he's a solid pro. The massive third-year LG, Derrick Dockery, is still playing through inconsistently. Dockery is the key. If and when he starts to play solid fundamental football, this line will be right up there with the best in the league.

WarpathInsiders.com--The Redskins went into their bye week buoyed by their late rally against Dallas and they fed off of the energy of that all week. The Chiefs preceeded their bye with that ugly collapse against Philly. Was this something that they stewed over during the off week or is the feeling that they were able to put it behind them?
Warpaint: The players were each given a week off.  The majority of players left town the day after their embarrassing home loss to the Eagles.  Now some would say that was a mistake including yours truly but Vermeil has done this in the past.  One thing this team does very well, because they've had lots of practice, is the ability to forget a loss quickly.  After the Philly game quarterback Trent Green and tight end Tony Gonzalez were very critical of the coaching staff in regards to their lack of creativity calling offensive plays.  One of the problems is the fact offensive coordinator Al Saunders does not allow Green to call audibles at the line of scrimmage.  That should change some this week against the Redskins.  The Broncos didn't do many check-offs at the line of scrimmage and for the most part their offensive was ineffective. Knowing that All-World left tackle Willie Roaf back in the line-up on Sunday has made it easier for the entire organization to get over the Eagles loss.  Many blame the Chiefs two game slide squarely on the fact Roaf was unable to play in losses at Denver and home against the Eagles.  We'll see Sunday if that was a correct assessment.

Warpaint: There have been a lot of comparisons between Joe Gibbs and Dick Vermeil?  Do you think that at their respective ages they can still reach the younger players? Both teams have a certain veteran flavor to them is that and advantage?
WarpathInsiders.com--I think that Vermeil has proven that it can be done as he won it all with the Rams. I think that Gibbs, like Vermeil, earns the respect of both rookies and veterans because he's not about to rest on his past accomplishments. Gibbs works just like he did as a rookie coach and the players know that he's doing all that is humanly possible to give them the best chance of winning. As far as being a veteran team, they have a lot of veterans in their late 20's, right in what should be their prime years as players. That's a very good thing.

WarpathInsiders.com--Is this Dick Vermiel's last year as coach? If so, and even if he sticks for another year after that, is there an heir apparent on the staff right now?

Warpaint: From the outside looking in it would appear that offensive coordinator Al Saunders would be the heir apparent but some in the organization don't feel that he's the man for the job.  Privately the Chiefs would love to lure Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Bill Cowher away from the Steel City.  That might be a possibility if the Steelers struggle this year and Cowher wants a change of scenery.  One name to keep an eye on is Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress.  Another name mentioned with the Kansas City Chiefs head coaching position is current USC Head Coach Pete Carroll.  Though it appears from all accounts that the San Diego Chargers will make yet another run at Carroll, he fits the mold of the type of younger coach the Chiefs might be looking for to guide them in 2006 and beyond.  Vermeil has no plans at this point to come back in 2006.  This should be his final year of coaching regardless of how the team does in January or February, if they make it that far.

Warpaint: Who is the most overrated and underrated player on the Redskins?
WarpathInsiders.com--For overrated, I'd have to go with Clinton Portis, specifically his breakaway ability. We just haven't seen it since his very first carry as a Redskin. Don't get me wrong, he's a hard worker and a good back, perhaps a very good one, but so far not worth the investment the Redskins have made in him. Underrated is DT Cornelius Griffin's middle name. He's a disruptive force in the middle of the line, single-handedly wrecking any plans the opposition has of running up the middle. He did this all of last year and got six sacks and was still just a fourth alternate for the Pro Bowl. He'll get to know Priest Holmes very well on Sunday.

WarpathInsiders.com--Who is the most overrated player on the Chiefs and who is the most underrated?
Warpaint: Right now the most overrated player has to be safety Greg Wesley.  After signing a huge contract at the conclusion of the 2003 season, Wesley has yet to play with the fire that warrants such a large lump of coin.  When the Chiefs signed safety Sammy Knight in free agency, the team indicated that the former Dolphin would start.  That meant Greg Wesley and Jerome Woods would battle it out for the other starting spot.  Wesley took the challenge and had a solid offseason and preseason but he's yet to play what I consider a solid game for the Chiefs this season.  His signature is hitting people and he's yet to play up to his potential.  He's been out of position far too often and is slow to react to the ball.  That has to change if this defense is going to improve over the final 12 games of the season.  As far as the other side of the fence, the person who is not getting enough respect is wide receiver Eddie Kennison.  After bouncing around with four NFL teams, he's found a home with the Chiefs.  He's been by far the teams most consistent offensive performer and seems to be getting better with age.  Kennison is Trent Green's favorite target and the most consistent offensive weapon they have in the passing game outside of tight end Tony Gonzalez.  With Gonzalez being forced to remain in the backfield to help with pass protection, Kennison is the only viable option for the Chiefs down the field.  He reminds me of James Lofton who's productivity increased when he hit his 30's.

Warpaint: Many people had the Redskins dead last in the tough NFC East this season. What has been the biggest surprise of their 3-1 start?
WarpathInsiders.com--The start hasn't been a big surprise to those of us who know Gibbs from his last run here. There has always been a feeling that things would click once Gibbs got re-accelerated to the NFL. He's gotten rid of some malcontents, he's tweaked to offense, notably by adding the shotgun, and things are starting to come together. Don't forget that the team won three of its last five last year with the two losses being agonizingly close.

WarpathInsiders.com--If this was a game that the Chiefs absolutely had to win and they had to make either Priest Holmes or Larry Johnson inactive, which one would they choose and why?
Warpaint: You have to go with Priest Holmes.  This offense has struggled because they're not giving the rock to Holmes more often.  Against the Eagles he was shredding their defense for big gainers but for some reason the team put him on the bench.  Larry Johnson came in and didn't run the ball very well.  That hurt the rhythm of the offense and it cost them a victory against Philadelphia.  Holmes is still one of the best running backs in the NFL.  He has to get the ball until his legs fall off.  He's only going to play one maybe two more seasons and with Johnson waiting in the wings; Kansas City would be hard pressed to convince anyone that they want to limit his reps for later in the season.  They need to run him until he can't run anymore and if he gets injured then Johnson has proven he can be the man in this offense.  But that time is not now.  Give the ball to Holmes and let the good times roll.

Warpaint:Mark Brunell appears back to the form that made him a star in Jacksonville.  Though he does not have the down field threats he had with the Jaguars, what makes him so special?
WarpathInsiders.com--Well, now we're to the surprises. A year ago, everyone wanted his head on a platter and today he's the hero. He just manages the game very well, he doesn't make mistakes, and throws with timing, zip, and accuracy. He's Joe Gibbs on the field. As to not having the downfield threats, were you among the millions who turned off their TV's a few Monday nights ago and missed Brunell tossing two long ones to Santana Moss? He is the deep threat the Redskins have lacked since Gary Clark left about 10 years ago.

WarpathInsiders.com--We all know that Dante Hall is as dangerous a returner as there is in the league. As far as Hall, how is he coming along as a receiving threat? And as far as the KC special teams in general, Hall's skills aside, are they good, bad, or OK?
Warpaint:  As brilliant as Hall is as a returner, he could be even more effective if he would concentrate on special teams only.  Whenever Hall is asked to play offense his return skills suffer greatly.  The biggest debate in the offseason was to find a veteran receiver to pick up the slack so Hall could focus on returning kicks and punts.  That has not happened to date.  Even worse no other receiver has stepped up outside of Kennison so Hall is being asked to play in more and more offensive sets.  He's a solid receiver but not great.  His size creates problems but so does his speed so it's a double-edge sword for the quarterback to find him and for the defenders to stop him.  The rest of the Chiefs special teams are solid.  Left footed rookie Punter Dustin Colquitt has been impressive to say the least.  With his unorthodox spin on the ball opponents have fumbled three of four punts inside the 20-yard line this season.  However the Chiefs have only recovered one of them to date but it took Dante Hall nearly two weeks in practice to get the hang of catching his punts cleanly.  Kicker Lawrence Tynes has been impressive as well.  After struggling early, he's seven of nine on the season and has been impressive on kick-offs.  He has one of the strongest legs in the NFL but sometimes his mechanics get skewed when he rushes his foot through the ball.  One thing that has helped him is the fact that the team finally settled on a holder.  In a season and half, the Chiefs have used seven holders.  Colquitt, who has never held before, has taken over those duties and he's been impressive especially when you consider he's never done that before at any point in his career.  Colquitt and Tynes have a tremendous bond and trust between them.
