Team Report: Quite a Rush

Clinton Portis had been waiting eight games, 161 carries and 295 days for a touchdown. So he decided to triple his pleasure. Washington's running back rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Redskins to a 52-17 rout of visiting San Francisco on Sunday.

INSIDE SLANT

"Man, that was the best feeling," said Portis, who performed dance moves after the first score with 4:48 left in the first quarter, did cartwheels after the second with 5:39 to go in the first half, and delivered a jig he said derived from the film "Napoleon Dynamite" following the last one at 4:56 into the third quarter.

Coach Joe Gibbs, who prided himself on his rushing offense during his first Hall of Fame tenure in Washington, was as relieved as his top back to see him hit pay dirt.

"There's no reason we shouldn't be a good rush team," Gibbs said. "It was frustrating for us, and certainly for Clinton, so it was good to get a couple down in there. Maybe that was a good omen."

Portis carried 19 times for 101 yards before being yanked midway through the third quarter with Washington up 42-7. Backup Ladell Betts added 92 yards on 12 carries, while third-stringer Rock Cartwright contributed a late touchdown.

"I know Clinton was definitely excited to get in the end zone," right tackle Jon Jansen said. "I'm happy for him and that we got some rushing touchdowns, but no matter who scored 'em, we're happy we had 52 points."

NOTES, QUOTES

Mike Sellers caught just 26 passes with six touchdowns during his first five NFL seasons. But after scoring on both of his catches against the 49ers, the H-back has four touchdowns on five catches this season.

"I'm not going to try to figure it out or why it's happening," Sellers said. "I'm just taking it as it comes."

Joked Portis, "I'm going to have to do something to Mike because he's taking away from my touchdowns."

Sellers' 2-yard touchdown that opened the scoring was typical of his short catches, but his 19-yard grab that made it 35-7 just before halftime was a different story.

"I was shocked," Sellers said of being so wide-open on the designed pass down the middle from quarterback Mark Brunell.

"Mike is getting open because nobody wants to tackle him," Brunell said about the 260-pound former fullback's sudden scoring prowess. "He was the go-to guy on that play. We looked at the film and saw an opportunity depending on the coverage. We got the right coverage and he ran a great route."

Running back Rock Cartwright blamed himself for last week's 28-21 loss because not only did he fumble at Kansas City's 25-yard line with the score tied 14-14, but the Chiefs scooped the ball up and raced 80 yard for the go-ahead touchdown.

So Cartwright was happy to have bounced back with a 4-yard touchdown against the 49ers, one of his five carries for 14 yards. He also returned all four kickoffs for a total of 82 yards.

"It still doesn't make up for what happened last week, but I appreciate getting the opportunity to get to carry the ball," said Cartwright, whose last score had come in the 2003 finale against Philadelphia. "The offensive line did a great job blocking. All I had to do was make a move and run to the end zone."

Portis said Cartwright has been too hard on himself.

"Rock shouldn't feel bad," Portis said. "Everybody in the world fumbles, Bo Jackson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders. If you (let it) linger, that's when it becomes a problem. He got another opportunity, and he redeemed himself."

Cartwright said he became the deep man on kickoff returns because Betts was coming off a groin injury and because special teams coach Danny Smith, anticipating onside kicks from the 49ers, moved normal return man James Thrash up to the front line.

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey got back on the field with 13:02 left for the first time since getting his bell rung in the opener and Brunell's strong play made the season-opening starter an afterthought.

"It felt good to get back in there and get a little work in," said Ramsey, who handed off eight times and threw an 8-yard pass to backup tight end Brian Kozlowski before taking a knee on the game's final three snaps. "I love to get in there in whatever capacity. I knew at halftime there was a good chance I would get in, but I didn't know exactly when it was going to be. But I knew when we scored early (in the third quarter), I would probably get a chance to play."

PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES

CB Carlos Rogers was held out of Sunday's game against the 49ers after aggravating the ankle he had sprained the previous week. Rogers should return as the nickel back this week at the N.Y. Giants.

DT Joe Salave'a gutted it out against San Francisco, starting despite an extremely painful plantar fascia, in part because fellow DTs Cedric Killings (ankle) and Aki Jones (hamstring) were hurt even worse. Salave'a, who didn't practice last week, was limping badly on Monday, but is expected to remain in the lineup in New York.

WR Santana Moss has 38 catches, 743 yards (19.6 average) and five touchdowns through six games, putting him on pace for the greatest season by a receiver for a franchise that has employed Hall of Fame wideouts Charley Taylor and Bobby Mitchell as well as standouts Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Charlie Brown and Henry Ellard.

DT Cornelius Griffin will likely miss at least one practice this week after straining a hip flexor against the 49ers. Coach Joe Gibbs is hopeful that Griffin, who has missed just five games in his six seasons, will be ready to face his old team this Sunday.

FS Sean Taylor, who came within three yards of his first touchdown after picking off the fifth pass of his career, was limping around on Monday with an ailing ankle and might miss some practice time this week.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

REPORT CARD VS. 49ERS

PASSING OFFENSE: A At 35, Mark Brunell is giving the Redskins their best quarterbacking since Brad Johnson during the 1999 NFC East title season. Brunell had three touchdowns and no interceptions against San Francisco. WR Santana Moss sparkles every week, chalking up five catches, 112 yards and a TD on Sunday. WR David Patten showed some life with some big yards after the catch early. The line dominated the 49ers, allowing just one sack. H-back Mike Sellers scored two TDs, including a career-high best 19-yarder. H-back Chris Cooley set up a score with a 32-yard grab. TE Robert Royal was quiet.

RUSHING OFFENSE: A RB Clinton Portis ended his end zone drought in a big way, scoring three times in the first 34 minutes. He wound with up 101 yards on 19 carries, his third 100-yard effort in six games this year. After missing last week with an injured groin, RB Ladell Betts added 92 yards on 12 carries. Even third-string RB Rock Cartwright hit the end zone for the first time in two years. The line opened plenty of holes, helping the backs average 5.6 yards per carry.

RUSH DEFENSE: B-plus DT Cornelius Griffin had a sack before leaving with an injured groin. DT Joe Salave'a started despite missing all week with an injured foot. DE Renaldo Wynn forced a fumble and DE Phillip Daniels recovered one. DE Nic Clemons made his NFL debut in the fourth quarter. SS Ryan Clark, back after missing last week with a bruised spleen, couldn't stop Kevan Barlow on the 49ers' lone TD until Frank Gore's 72-yard dash with 2:00 left. Playing extensively for the first time in a year, LB LaVar Arrington led the Redskins with nine tackles.

PASS DEFENSE: A FS Sean Taylor intercepted a pass and returned it to the San Francisco 3-yard line. CB Shawn Springs was in shutdown mode. CB Walt Harris rallied after being beaten a couple of times early. LB Marcus Washington forced a fumble on his sack. LB Lemar Marshall added a sack as the Redskins got to 49ers QB Alex Smith five times and held the No. 1 pick in the draft to 54 yards net passing.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-plus K Nick Novak kicked a routine FG. Derrick Frost had a shank among his four punts. James Thrash did a good job with punt returns, while Rock Cartwright wasn't special in a rare game as the No. 1 kick returner. The coverage units were fine with Mike Sellers and Sean Taylor delivering especially big hits.

COACHING: A-minus Joe Gibbs going ballistic last Monday about the potential for his team being upset got everyone's attention. Defensive boss Gregg Williams finally saw the wisdom of playing LaVar Arrington. Special teams coach Danny Smith wasn't burned by making Rock Cartwright his No. 1 kick returner for the day.
