Game Blog Redskins vs. Raiders--Final

Tandler's Redskins GameBlog 11.20.05 Redskins vs. Raiders live from FedEx Field--16:30 EST Final--Redskins' offense fails to show up in the second half and the Raiders rally to a 16-13 win.

First Quarter

Portis is quick. He showed great speed getting to the edge on his first run. And he's tough, bowling through for an extra yard or two and the end of the run. His 1,500-yard seasons may be a thing of the past, but he plays for my team with his "mere" 1,300-yard annual tallies.

Derrick Frost is learning how to place punts. First punt of the day a 33-yarder that was fair caught at the 10. That's not good for the average, but perfect for retaining the field position edge that the Redskins gained on the opening kickoff.

The field position and pressure on the QB leads to six points for the Redskins. Finally, an errant pass caused by rare pressure on the quarterback actually lands in the hands of a Redskin instead of falling harmlessly to the ground. TD for Lamar Marshall and it's one topping on the Papa John's pizza just 10:34 into the game. Give an assist to Chris Clemons on the touchdown for his pressure on Kerry Collins on the play.

Lamont Jordan is running hard, but he's running right into a sea of Redskins every time. On top of that, Collins doesn't look sharp, throwing behind TE Courtney Anderson on his initial pass unimpeded by pressure from the Redskins.

Moss vs. Sean Taylor round 1 goes to Taylor with an assist to Collins. Moss had a step on Taylor but the ball hung up a bit too long. Moss coiled to make a leap for one of his patented leaping grabs but Taylor interrupted his path to the ball with a diving attempt for the interception. Taylor got both hands on the ball, but couldn't hold on as he fell to the ground.

Jordan off tackle on third and ten? Don't quite get that one, Norv.

Wow, R. Moss actually getting called for a pushoff. Those guys generally get away with it all the time. Perhaps Moss' star is fading. It saves the Redskins four points as the Raiders have to settle for the field goal after a turnover deep in Washington territory and a subsequent first and goal at the two. Good D for the Redskins.

Note to self—find out exactly what the rules are on penalties on kicking plays. It seems as though you have three options; to decline, to accept at the end of the play, or to have them rekick. I'm not sure about that, though.

Second Quarter

Degenerating into a little sloppiness here with three flags in the first 17 seconds of the second quarter to add on to the one at the tail end of the first. The Redskins' pass protection is breaking down a little, too with Brunell getting smacked around a bit and having to scramble for a first down on third down.

S. Moss isn't catching many long passes lately, but they're playing him so soft that he can get the square ins and quick outs to pick up first downs. He has two third-down conversions on this drive.

Portis is hesitating at the line a bit. There isn't much there on his past several carries, but he needs to take what sliver is there quicker. He's getting stopped at the line instead of gaining 2-3 yards.

Ever since that interception, Collins has been getting a lot of time to throw. The Redskins are sending an extra rusher here and there, but we haven't seen the send the house blitz.

That was a rather uninspiring three and out by the Redskins deep in their territory leading to excellent field position for the Raiders. Collins isn't sharp, but you can't keep giving him snaps in Washington territory or he'll put it in the end zone sooner or later.

No feel, no rhythm to the Redskins' offense. It sputters and then moves enough to put a couple of field goals on the board.

Third Quarter

Just got word that Thrash suffered a hamstring injury and probably won't be back. That hurts the return game and perhaps forces Rich Parson into the game at WR. Some serious ripple effects when a guy who does so much.

Way too much time for Collins and this time the Redskins pay as he bombs to Jerry Porter, who was being covered one on one by Lamar Marshall. You have to get pressure when your middle linebacker is covering a wide receiver all the way downfield.

Well, Taylor Jacobs is proving to be as useful as David Patten. He drew a pass interference penalty on a long pass, moving the ball into Raider territory. Unfortunately, the Redskins coughed it up, Portis with his second fumble of the game.

Portis isn't losing the ball on direct hits, it seems like he's losing it in the pile.

Tell you what, I'll let you know when the Redskins get some pass pressure on Collins. Still, it's been since that first INT and they haven't touched him since and he's been killing them. I don't want to keep repeating the same thing over and over, so assume the status quo unless you hear otherwise.

Well, it took a third and 25 play, a pretty certain passing situation, but the Redskins did get to Collins again. That and a personal foul penalty on third and ten cost the Raiders a shot at a game-tying field goal, at least. Washington needs to grind out a drive here, burn off some time and get another score.

Overall, it's not really right to "blame" the defense for the fact that the Raiders are hanging around in this game. The Redskins' offense isn't exactly taking advantage of a weak Oakland defense and just can't get anything going with any consistency.
A good snag by Rock Cartwright to convert a third and long. He plays like he's about to get cut every time out.

Fourth Quarter

Time for another turnover with the ball deep in Washington territory.

You certainly can't accuse Turner of giving up on the run. Jordan keeps on running into brick walls, but they keep on pounding it and pounding it. Nineteen carries for 47 yards.

Remember the deal with the pass pressure, that I'd let you know when they got some? Well, we're back on that deal again. He's got a classic pocket to throw from almost every time he drops back.

They almost got to Collins and Taylor almost took Porter's head off, but the bottom line was another third-down conversion for the Raiders. This is getting scary.

Great play by Arrington to hold the Raiders to a field goal. He guessed right and nailed Jordan for a loss. It's pretty safe to say that Warrick Holdman does not make that play.

I hope that the Raiders don't kick off again for a few reasons. One is that it's Rich Parson on the return with Nemo Broughton back with him. That's a very green combination there to say the least.

I trust that somebody is seeing something down the left sideline as the Redskins' last three passes have gone deep there, two to Jacobs and one to Moss. None has been close to being completed and it's a three and out in a big spot for the Redskins. It's the Raiders' game to win or lose now.

It's third down again and that bell they play at the stadium has been a death knell for the Redskins as the Raiders keep on converting time after time. They had another one, but Jordan flat-out dropped the ball.

After spending about two minutes on the field flat on his back, Mike Sellers returns to the field full of fight. He's one tough hombre.

A second consecutive three and out and a not-too-good punt gives the Raiders excellent field position to try to win it. The Redskins need a turnover or I don't think they'll be able to pull this one out.

The Redskins get another big hit on a pass play but again it's a completion, this one good for only five yards, though.

They almost got the turnover, but Zack Crockett reeled his fumble back in after a gain of about 13 yards. Big-time killer there as Collins has the hot hand.

Some pretty bad clock management there by the Raiders. Collins snapped the ball with a full 14 seconds left on the play clock and then they passed on third down. It left Washington with a full minute and needing a field goal to tie it back up. The way the offense has been playing, it's not very likely.

Nope. Sack and fumble finish it off and the Redskins go down.
