Making the Grade By Getting a 'D'
Seattle Improves on 'Other' Side of the Ball
By Les Carpenter, Washington Post

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Draft week always brought nods and smirks. The needs never changed for the Seattle Seahawks -- a hulking defensive end, a middle linebacker, a safety who could knock people flat. The choices were always obvious. Reports were made, arguments pursued, the data delivered and everyone knew just where it would go.

In the days when Mike Holmgren served double duty as coach and general manager here, the most compelling arguments for a defensive star were always for naught.

Sun Might Peek Through By Game Time
Seahawks Notebook
By Les Carpenter, Washington Post

KIRKLAND, Wash., Jan. 11 -- For a few hours yesterday the gray sheets of rain stopped, the clouds split and a glimpse of the sun peeked through the muck. And for these few hours Seattle smiled.

But the gleam was short-lived and by early afternoon, the gloom rolled back in and the skies once again doused a city already drenched. Wednesday marked the 24th straight day on which it has rained here -- a significant number even in a city that knows the drizzle all too well.

Prioleau Grabs an Opportunity
Redskins Situational Defensive Back Rises to a 'Major Challenge'
By Eli Saslow, Washington Post

There are two ways to look at this, Pierson Prioleau figures, and he always has classified himself as an optimist.

The safety could take his new reputation -- that he's a target -- as the ultimate insult. After all, Prioleau said, opponents want to throw his way because they believe he's too slow, too small and too indecisive to make a play. "If you're a target," Washington cornerback Ade Jimoh said, "there's a problem."

Seattle's Super Fan, Complete With Bendable Arms
By Eli Saslow, Washington Post

Big Lo has been on a diet lately, so the most recognizable fan in Seattle said he might be difficult to spot Saturday at Qwest Field. He has cut down on his beer drinking -- not by too much, he said -- and started to exercise, if only once in a while.

He's now down to 460 pounds.

If Wynn Can't Play, He'd Like To Be There
Redskins Notebook
By Jason La Canfora, Washington Post

Defensive end Renaldo Wynn was back at Redskins Park yesterday after having season-ending arm surgery Sunday, and he said he hoped to accompany the team to Seattle for Saturday's playoff game. Wynn is still awaiting clearance, and has been ordered to rest after having surgery in which two plates were inserted in his right forearm. But as one of the team's leaders he would like to travel with the Redskins when they depart today.

With no offense, no chance
By Dan Daly, The Washington Times

Congratulations to the Patriots' Willie McGinest -- not for setting an NFL postseason record Saturday with 4-1/2 sacks against the Jaguars, but for reminding us that the old record was shared by long lost Redskins linebacker Rich Milot, who had 3-1/2 against the Bears in the '84 playoffs. I was at RFK Stadium that gray afternoon and, frankly, I have no memory of Milot's Lawrence Taylor-like performance. He racked up more sacks in that game, believe it or not, than he did in all but one of six NFL seasons (career sack total: 141/2).

No. 1 task: Stop Alexander
By Jon Siegel, The Washington Times

The mission is simple.

Accomplishing it is anything but.

The Washington Redskins must neutralize NFL MVP Shaun Alexander to have any chance of upsetting the Seattle Seahawks in Saturday's NFC Divisional playoff contest. The explosive, bruising running back finished with an NFL-record 28 touchdowns and 1,880 yards while leading the Seahawks to the top seed in the conference.

'Inspirational' Wynn will travel with team
By Ryan O'Halloran, The Washington Times

With two metal plates in his fractured right forearm, Washington Redskins defensive end Renaldo Wynn hopes to accompany the team to Seattle today for Saturday's NFC Divisional playoff game.

Wynn returned to Redskin Park yesterday for the first time since being injured in the first quarter of last weekend's 17-10 win over Tampa Bay.

Portis shows up without disguise
By Ryan O'Halloran, The Washington Times

A circus that started with racquetball glasses in late September and morphed into a weekly event that included wigs, fake teeth, an array of eyewear and several teammates ended for at least one week yesterday when Clinton Portis appeared at his press conference as -- surprise, surprise -- Clinton Portis.

Portis, the Washington Redskins' record-setting running back, began dressing up before the team's Week 4 game against Seattle. For 11 of the next 13 weeks, he became a different alter ego.

Sack-happy Daniels buoys defense
By David Elfin, The Washington Times

In nine-plus NFL seasons, Phillip Daniels was seen as a solid starting defensive end with a massive wingspan, but the 6-foot-5, 290-pound Georgian never reached the level of Pro Bowl consideration.

Until the past month.

At 32, Daniels, who had recorded just 471/2 sacks in those nine-plus seasons, has seven sacks in his last four games, which has helped elevate the Redskins from also-ran to NFC semifinalist. Not only is Washington 5-1 when Daniels sacks the quarterback, but his three years on playoff teams coinc

All their best: The Seattle Times all-time Seahawks team
By José Miguel Romero, Seattle Times

The greatest season ever has produced some of the greatest players in the 30-year history of the Seahawks.

Alexander. Jones. Hutchinson. Tobeck.

They join the likes of Krieg, Green, Kennedy, Largent and the late Dave Brown on the Seattle Times' all-time Seahawks team.

Seahawks Notebook: Jackson plans to get back in receiving line
By José Miguel Romero, Seattle Times

KIRKLAND — The week of the Seahawks-Washington Redskins regular-season game in October, Darrell Jackson was in the top five in the NFL in receptions and receiving yards.

He was on his way to perhaps the best of his six seasons in Seattle, with 22 catches for 321 yards in three games. But a bothersome right knee was too painful to ignore any longer after the Washington game, which he played.

Shawn Springs ready for big reunion
By Greg Bishop, Seattle Times

ASHBURN, Va. — Shawn Springs often sounds this week like someone who practiced his interviews at home in the mirror. Springs loves Seattle and its fans and restaurants. Springs remembers a first-class organization and a cohesive locker room.

Springs, on Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren: "We had a really, really good relationship."

Washington Notebook: Aww ... Portis shows up as just himself
By Greg Bishop, Seattle Times

ASHBURN, Va. — Clinton Portis is one strange dude. He ended his costume show after weeks of dressing up and introducing characters like Southeast Jerome and Bro Sweets at interview sessions. Two questions remained.

How can reality be stranger than fiction?

And will Washington's six-game winning streak end along with it?

Candid QB: Hasselbeck sets example
By Paul Woody, Richmond Times-Dispatch

Matt Hasselbeck might not be the best quarterback in the NFL, but he might be the best one to emulate.

That more people don't say this probably has as much to do with where he works, Seattle, the outermost outpost of the NFL, and the team he plays for, the Seahawks, than anything else.

Fiery or warm and fuzzy, Holmgren hits all the right notes
By Danny O'Neil, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Conversation on the Seahawks' plane quieted as Mike Holmgren ambled down the aisle toward the back, where his players lounged in first-class seats.

The team's 11-game winning streak had just ended in Green Bay with a loss to the Packers, Holmgren's former team, and the coach wanted a word with his players.

Was he furious? No. He was furry, attired in a cushy black jacket belonging to defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs.

Go 2 Guy: Lay your hit, hold the spit
By Jim Moore, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Sean Taylor seems like one of those guys who is so talented that the Redskins put up with his character flaws.

Do a little research on the Internet and you'll discover a variety of offenses, some team-related and his latest, a charge of felony assault for allegedly brandishing a gun at people he believed stole two all-terrain vehicles from him.

His past is littered with questionable and dubious stuff.

Seahawks Notebook: Coaches can stake claim to NFL history
By Danny O'Neil, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

KIRKLAND -- No head coach has ever led two different teams to a Super Bowl victory.

And of the eight head coaches whose teams are still alive in the playoffs this season, only Mike Holmgren has the chance to complete that double play this year.

But if Washington were to win, Joe Gibbs would deserve an asterisk. After all, he was away from the NFL for 11 years, leaving in 1992 and returning last season. He came back to the same franchise, but not the same league.

No quit in him - now
Disgusted with the Seahawks' team president, Mike Holmgren nearly quit a year ago. After a shakeup, he has them poised for a title run.
By Laura Vecsey, Special to the (Hampton Roads, VA) Daily Press

KIRKLAND, WASH. -- Mike Holmgren will not gloat, not a lot anyway. He will not wag his finger and say he was right, that one year ago this week, the Seattle Seahawks needed a serious shakedown, a regime change.

He will not, in a playoff season where the Seahawks have reason to be considered the favorite among Super Bowl contenders, spend inordinate time insinuating that had things gone the other way, who knows if the Hawks would be where they are right now? They are 13-3 and supreme among NFC playoff seeds heading into Saturday's game against the Washington Redskins; the most efficient offense in the NFL this season; as formidable and productive and balanced as any team poised to play into February.

Redskins Playoff Blog

Just got back from Redskins Park and got to thinking about what everybody has been talking about going into this game. All you hear is how Seattle's offense is SO potent and that the Redskins won't be able to keep up. If I'm not mistaken, the last time they played NFL MVP RB Shaun Alexander was held to 13 yards in the first half. Oh yeah, the Redskins won, too. I don't care which team wins, but surely Washington has a good shot at defeating the Seahawks again. Yes, Seattle is rested after a bye in the first round. But the Seahawks run the West Coast offense, which is based on timing. So they'll be a little rusty.

‘Change is good’
Why did Shawn Springs leave Seattle for the ’Skins? ’Cuz what Mom says, goes
By Darrin Beene, The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune

ASHBURN, Va. – In the end, Shawn Springs’ mother trumped Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and all the others who don’t coach the Washington Redskins.

Joe Gibbs was the first of three NFL coaches to call him seconds after Springs became a free agent in March 2003. The Redskins coach made a forceful pitch, but it was Springs’ mother, Teresa, who sealed it.

Seahawks’ value soars on success
By Marcelene Edwards, The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune

Nothing is as good for the bottom line as a winning season.

Just ask the Seattle Seahawks.

Every game at Qwest Field this season sold out. For the first time in a decade, fans are clamoring for season tickets.

Tickets for Saturday’s playoff game sold out in 10 minutes. And running back Shaun Alexander’s jersey is the No. 10 best-seller among NFL players.

Scobey searches out any collision
Returning kicks or covering them, special teams captain always goes all out
By Mike Sando, The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune

KIRKLAND – Josh Scobey might be the Seattle Seahawks’ MAP: most appreciative player.

“I sit back and think about it a lot,” the fourth-year special teams standout said Wednesday. “I feel real fortunate to be a part of this team and to be continuing my season.”

January is the time of year when Scobey usually gets in touch with his travel agent to line up a vacation. Three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals produced a familiar routine. Life is different now.

Seahawks unsure how Jackson fits in
The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune

KIRKLAND – The last time the Seattle Seahawks were in the playoffs, Darrell Jackson set a franchise postseason record with 12 receptions against the St. Louis Rams.

Under ideal circumstances, the team might be spending this week devising ways for Jackson play a leading role in a divisional playoff game Saturday against the Washington Redskins.

Minus costume, Portis still ‘Hot Stuff’
By Darrin Beene, The (Tacoma, WA) News Tribune

ASHBURN, Va. – The silliness of Clinton Portis’ weekly news conferences didn’t stop just because Portis wore gray sweats and a beanie cap instead of an elaborate costume.

This character – dubbed “Hot Stuff” by the Washington Redskins running back – read from a letter Portis said he received from a famous actress.

Gregg Williams' defense is mainstay of Redskins' success
By Adam Himmelsbach, Frederickburg (VA) Free Lance-Press

ASHBURN--Gregg Williams got his work ethic from his father.

Ira Williams used to leave the house each morning to work at the General Motors plant in Kansas City, Kan. He missed just one day of work in 38 years. He taught his son the importance of preparation.

The Seattle Seahawks no-name defense allowed just 1,510 yards rushing in 16 games and allowed only one running back - the Giants' Tiki Barber - to rush for 100 or more yards.
By Scott M. Johnson, Snohomish County (WA) Daily Herald

KIRKLAND - Without a Kenny Easley, a Cortez Kennedy or a Joe Nash, the 2005 Seattle Seahawks defense has gone where no other before it had.

The Seahawks yielded just 1,510 rushing yards in 16 games in 2005. The only time this franchise has allowed fewer rushing yards in a single season was during the nine-game, strike-shortened year in 1982.

Defense pumps up the volume
By Scott M. Johnson, Snohomish County (WA) Herald

KIRKLAND - The Seattle Seahawks turned the tables in practice Wednesday by turning up the volume on their defense.

The team makes a common practice out of using a sound system to simulate crowd noise for the offense before road games, but Wednesday's exercise was a whole new ball game as the Seahawks prepared to host the Washington Redskins in Saturday's playoff game at Qwest Field.
