Redskins Trade Up, Select LB McIntosh

The Redskins acquired the 35th pick in the draft and took Rocky McIntosh, linebacker from Miami of Florida.

The Redskins drafted Rocky McIntosh, Miami linebacker, with their first selection in the draft. Washington traded their second-round pick both this near (#53) and next and one of their 2006 sixth-round picks (#189).

Here's a report on him we filed just a few days ago, much more coming soon:

On both sides of the ball, the Redskins are loaded with star contributors from the University of Miami. Their leading rusher, Clinton Portis, and leading receiver, Santana Moss, both hail from "The U" and Sean Taylor of Miami is possibly the defender that opposing teams fear the most. The Redskins could be looking at adding another former Hurricane to their lineup.

Roger McIntosh is an outside linebacker who will almost certainly be on the board when Washington's turn comes up at the 53rd pick of the draft. He has the right combination of size, speed and big-time college experience to become a contributor at linebacker in the NFL in 2006.

McIntosh played all three linebacker positions at Miami, but the Redskins would be looking at him for LaVar Arrington's old position, weak side linebacker. He might want to add a dozen or so pounds to his frame to be able to better handler the demands of the position. With a 4.6 time is the 40 posted at the combine, his speeds is respectable, but not excellent. In interviews at the combines he claimed to have 4.4 speed, but he clocked identical times of 4.61 in two runs at the combine and at Miami's pro day he came in at between 4.5 and 4.6.

Under the negatives listed in his scouting report is a tendency to play out of control and over-pursue. This has to be a concern in the wake of the departure of Arrington, who often did the exact same thing. The Redskins will have to decide that this is a tendency that McIntosh can be coached out of, something that they were never able to do with Arrington, before they spend a draft pick on him.

Rocky McIntosh Nitty-Gritty

40: 4.6
Year: 5Sr

Bio: Full-time starter the past two seasons after spending half his freshman campaign with the first team. Led Miami in tackles as a senior posting 80/10/5.5 after career-best numbers of 111/13/4 as a junior.

Pos: Physically gifted linebacker with the skills to be a three-down defender. Forceful up the field, collapses from the outside defending the run and gets depth on drops. Displays skill in pursuit and plays with a good degree of explosion. Holds his ground against blocks, chases hard to get involved in the action.

Neg: Does not consistently play under control, over-pursues the action and gets caught out of position. Suffered with both back and shoulder injuries the past two years.

Analysis: A motivated linebacker who leads by example, McIntosh is a solid athlete with the skills to play at the next level. Needs to fine-tune his game and, most importantly, stay healthy to have any chance of breaking into a starting lineup.
