Sixth-Round Pick Doughty Signs

Reed Doughty, an Academic All-American at Northern Colorado, decided that the smart thing to do would be to agree to a contract with the Redskins before minicamp. A look at the roster reveals that he has an excellent chance of sticking around in September.

Reed Doughty, a sixth-round selection in last April's draft, has become the first player selected in that draft to agree to a contract with the team.

Doughty, out of Northern Colorado, comes in to an excellent situation. He is a safety and there are only two holdovers at that position from last year. Certainly free agent signee Adam Archuleta will join Sean Taylor and Pierson Prioleau to form the veteran core at the position, but the team is likely to carry at least four safeties on the final roster, giving Doughty an excellent chance of making the final cut. The only other safeties currently on the roster are street free agents Wilson Dennard and Curry Burns.

An Academic All-American, Doughty certainly has studied his new employers well. He has spoken often of the importance of special teams play and that is always a key for a late-round selection trying to make a Joe Gibbs coached team.
