...The Redskins nearly traded for a guy who plays the same spot. And they didn't play him until injuries forced them to. But that hasn't stopped them from gushing about second-year linebacker Rocky McIntosh.
He'll start on the weakside.
"If I had to choose a person who has worked almost as hard as Jason Campbell has this offseason, it's been Rocky," said Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams. "He's been here on weekends; he's been here every day of the week. He's done a tremendous job of being attached at the hip of Kirk Olivadotti."
McIntosh returned to practice after missing Friday following the birth of his first child on Wednesday. What the coaches have liked this offseason is that he's no longer hesitant on the field.
"We're only in shorts, but the speed and anticipation of the opponents offensive concepts has been outstanding," Williams said. "He's had a very strong spring and I hope this will transfer into that second year blossoming breakout season."
...Sad news about ex-Redskins receiver Justin Skaggs, who died of a brain tumor Friday. He was a terrific story when he made the roster here and won over many hearts.
"All of us at the Washington Redskins are shocked and saddened by the death of Justin Skaggs," Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. "During his two years with the team no one worked harder to make himself better and to make his team better. His family is in our prayers during this terribly tragic time."
...Shawn Springs did not attend practice today, still tending to his newborn son who was re-admitted to the hospital Friday.
...Clinton Portis did not take part in team drills after doing so yesterday. We're guessing it was to give him a break, because there was no official word as to why.
...Ex-Redskins linebacker Sam Huff attended today's workout, sitting with Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato on the sidelines.
... Here's another guy who flashed today: safety Reed Doughty. He'll have a tough battle earning a roster spot given the depth they've added at this spot, but he looked good Saturday. Doughty intercepted Mark Brunell one time and should have picked off Jason Campbell as well. Doughty showed excellent anticipation, looking much faster than last season. Doughty used that anticipation to make a play on a screen pass, too.
...Todd Wade is still adjusting to left guard and said it's hard to think of himself as anything other than a tackle. He admits the knee bend is much different inside and might be the biggest thing he has to adapt to. Today, he looked about the same. In the power game, he'll be fine. But there was one time that Anthony Montgomery quickly shot past him. Maybe that says as much about Montgomery as Wade.
...Chris Cooley continues to march to his own beat. He wore knee-high burgundy socks during the workout.
...The consensus among observers is that Jason Campbell is having a terrific weekend. I told you what the word around the league was about him yesterday, but he has looked good. He made a beautiful 40-yard pass to the left corner that Antwaan Randle El hauled in easily and in stride.
...Mike Espy made the catch of the day, a diving grab on a slant pass. Got a feeling about that kid.
...Rock Cartwright got p-od after getting knocked down on a catch. He flung the ball then slammed his helmet to the ground.
...Can't say Joe Gibbs isn't a man of the people. After practice, he jogged around the field with rookie H.B. Blades and Doughty.
... The offensive line stuck around after practice for more one-on-one work.
