Best play: Tyler Ecker made the best catch, reaching out far for a Casey Bramlet pass down the middle of the field and hanging on as he stumbled forward.
Just like old times: The Redskins' defense got their hands on a lot of balls. But they dropped them all. Sean Taylor dropped an interception; Shawn Springs nearly made a diving pick in the middle of the field and Marcus Washington made a leaping deflection of another pass. But the more you're around the ball, the more likely they'll start falling in your hands. And it had to be good for the Redskins to see these players already in position to make plays.
Still waiting for: LaRon Landry. The rookie safety remains unsigned. Coach Joe Gibbs said he would be "disappointed" if Landry does not sign soon, but was uncertain when it would happen. We're guessing it'll be by the end of the weekend considering more top 10 picks are starting to sign.
Bad sign: Guard Randy Thomas left practice early with a sore knee. He had arthroscopic surgery on a knee on June 13. He'll be re-evaluated Saturday, though Thomas called it a precautionary measure and that they were simply being safe.
Crowd count: For an opening day it was not a big throng, though considering it was a 5 p.m. start on a Friday, it's hard to blame people for not coming. There were about 1,500 fans in attendance -- some tailgated on a patch of grass along the Loudoun County Parkway.
Old timers: Kicker Mark Moseley attended the workout. He's still involved in the Five Guys and a Burger chain and doing well. He really likes kicker Shaun Suisham; likes his mental approach -- says it's the best of any kicker the Redskins have had since he left.
The little things: We noticed Sean Taylor taking more steps back before coming up to support the run. Means he's playing pass first, which would help this defense considerably.
Quote: "Clinton is our starter. Ladell has an important role. That's one of the strengths of our team. I wish we were like that at every position." Joe Gibbs
