Jordan Palmer: QB Jordan Palmer seemed to be moving ever closer to winning the job as the No. 3 quarterback. After former Bengal Casey Bramlet was cut on Aug. 6, 35-year-old Todd Collins is Palmer's last remaining competition.
"They're looking at me to show that I'm worth developing," said Palmer. "If I am, I'm going to make the team. There were six (quarterbacks in minicamp) at one point and we have to end up with three."
That's true, however, it didn't help Palmer's cause that he didn't get a snap at Tennessee while Collins went 5-for-5 for 56 yards and led the winning touchdown drive in the final 4:16.
Todd Collins: QB Todd Collins' garbage-time performance in the final 4:16 at Tennessee was relatively impressive. The offense had been listless under both Jason Campbell and Mark Brunell, but Collins hit Burl Toler for six yards on his first play. After Marcus Mason ran for 13 yards, Collins hooked up with tight end Eric Edwards on three straight completions of five, six and 29 yards. Mason ran for three and after a penalty, Collins connected with fullback Pete Schmitt for 10 yards to put the ball on the 1 and set up Mason's winning plunge.
Other Player Updates:
Dallas Sartz: LB Dallas Sartz has "catching up to do" in the words of assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams if he's going to make the team.
H.B. Blades: LB H.B. Blades is backing up London Fletcher in the middle and should earn a roster spot after leading the team with nine tackles in the preseason opener.
RB Clinton Portis (knee) was in Nashville but missed his fourth straight preseason game dating back to last summer. Dr. James Andrews and the team doctors examined Portis in Nashville. He has missed two weeks as of Aug. 13.
