It was that kind of a day at Redskins Park, where good news mixed with the harsh reality of the business side of the NFL.
The Redskins cut Salave'a largely because they didn't feel confident he could stay healthy for an entire season, something he'd never done in his previous eight seasons. Plus, the Redskins like what they've seen of youngsters Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston and Lorenzo Alexander.
In addition, they've turned to using Phillip Daniels inside on passing downs.
‘'We've got some young guys here who are doing better,'' said assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams. ‘'We're trying to get faster. It was a tough decision, but it was one we had to make.''
Campbell, Portis and Chris Samuels all participated in individual drills. Campbell also took part in the team drills, sitting out some reps, and Portis participated in some. Samuels, though, did not. But he still appears on pace for the Sept. 9 opener.
Campbell will definitely play at Jacksonville on Thursday, but Portis' status remains uncertain.
‘'It felt good, actually,'' Portis said. ‘'I participated in everything; there wasn't no shortcuts… I've got to get my legs back under me. I slipped and fell a couple times running the ball, but outside of that I felt good.
‘'I hope I can prove to the coach that with fresh legs and a fresh body, that I'm durable for the long haul.''
Campbell said he gained confidence after standing in the pocket as the defense blitzed. They can't hit him in practice, but with bodies flying around, there's always the chance a player will get bumped somewhere.
He said it doesn't matter how much time he gets in Thursday.
‘'I want to get some work in, no matter how long or short I play,'' Campbell said. ‘'The most important thing is participating in practice; that's where we really run our whole offense.''
As for the other cuts, Washington placed Ross Tucker and Jason McAddley on injured reserve, with the intention of eventually releasing them with a settlement. They also waived fullback Pete Schmitt.
They'll make their final roster cuts by 4 p.m. Saturday.
