Redskins Notes

Who's #2? How is Portis? How is Samuels? How is Washington? It's all right here.

...Todd Collins took the snaps with the second unit and it appears as if he'll be the No. 2 quarterback behind Jason Campbell. Coach Joe Gibbs would not confirm this, saying he has not spoken with the quarterbacks about the situation, but Mark Brunell sounded resigned to his new No. 3 role.

''Every guy in a supporting role would like to be a starter, as close as possible to the starter. Whatever my role is, I'll go out and handle it like a professional and that's all you can do.''

...Running back Clinton Portis will start the opener, coach Joe Gibbs said. But how much his role is remains to be seen. Portis has not played in the preseason because of tendinitis in his knee. Gibbs said, ''It's not what you wanted, but it's what we were faced with.''

...Linebacker Marcus Washington practiced, but did not yet declare himself 100 percent ready for the opener. He did so last week, but has since toned it down, perhaps on the orders of a team that does not like to divulge much injury information. Washington had a black brace on his right elbow, which he said he's getting comfortable with.

...Linebacker Khary Campbell did not practice, but Gibbs called it a precaution. We're still not sure why there was any precautionary measures.

...Jon Jansen took more grief today about Michigan's stunning loss to Appalachian State. Though, as he headed into the trainer's room, someone asked him if anyone has rubbed it in, ''No, not at all,'' he said sarcastically.

...Chris Samuels took all the work in practice.
