McCardell signed; Redskins Notes

Washington signed receiver Keenan McCardell, hoping to bolster a receiving corps in need of help thanks to receiver Santana Moss' groin injury.

Moss did not practice Monday and said he's uncertain what he'll be able to do the rest of the week. His uncertainty is part of the reason Washington signed McCardell, a 12th-round draft choice of the Redskins in 1991 who has never caught a pass for them.

McCardell ranks ninth all-time with 861 receptions for 11,117 yards and 62 touchdowns. He caught 36 passes for 437 yards in San Diego last season. Washington wanted to sign him before training camp, but McCardell opted to sign with Houston. The Texans cut him during camp.

McCardell gives the Redskins a solid route-runner who is familiar with this offense. To get a little more up to speed Monday, McCardell stayed after practice to run routes with Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash and Reche Caldwell and quarterback Jason Campbell. Notable for his absence in that post-practice session: receiver Brandon Lloyd.

...Lloyd told reporters today that it's hard for him to sit on the sidelines because, well, he was brought here to make plays.

To which playcaller Al Saunders said, ''We brought him here to catch balls and make plays.'' Translation: he's doing neither.

...The Redskins cut safety Omar Stoutmire.

...Running back Clinton Portis did not practice Monday, which the team called a precautionary measure. Portis received treatment for his knee last week, which makes one wonder about whether or not his knee kept him out of the final sequence of plays vs. New York. Portis, Joe Gibbs and trainer Bubba Tyer all maintained after the Giants' loss that Portis' knee played no factor in him sitting out the final few plays. It probably didn't, though it's hard to tell sometimes. But we do know that Portis is infamous for finding any way to sit out practice. It could be that simple.

...Corner Fred Smoot (hamstring) practiced and Gibbs said he thinks he will play Sunday. However, Smoot was expected to play against the Giants, too, and did not.
