Why are the Redskins Scouting Running Backs?

Evidently, in addition to Corners and Linemen, the Redskins are also scouting..... Running Backs? That's right, the Redskins have a workout scheduled with a fairly highly ranked running back next month.

A league source has told Viking Update's Tim Yotter that amongst the teams Texas Running Back Jamaal Charles is set to work out for, the Redskins are in the mix.

This source confirmed that the Redskins have a workout scheduled for Jamaal on April 16th and 17th.

Well, one can certainly understand a team doing it's due diligence in preparation for the draft. No harm in that. Most teams probably interview and work out a bunch of players before the draft.

But a Running Back?

Is this simply due diligence, or is there more to this story? Are they scouting a Running Back for a reason?

What we do know is that the Redskins have Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Marcus Mason, Eric Shelton and recently re-signed Rock Cartwright already under contract.

So why would the Redskins even need to draft a Running Back? I guess you could argue that they need one for camp and for depth.

But if it is just for depth, why would the Redskins be looking at Jamaal, who is ranked the 4th best Running Back in this draft by Scout.com?

One could argue that Jamaal is probably going to go in the first or second round somewhere. Teams usually don't just look for depth and camp fodder in the first two rounds of the draft.

So the question is, is this guy being looked at as a real possibility for something, is this going to be a depth type of pick, or is this just the Redskins working out whoever is willing to work out?

Stay Tuned....
