June 10 OTA Quotes: Betts, Samuels and Smoot

See what Ladell Betts, Chris Samuels and Fred Smoot had to say about a variety of topics including the heat, the changes and Shawn Springs.

Ladell Betts (RB, #46)

On if the offense has found a rhythm:

"I think so. We are still learning on the run, but right now we have a pretty good grasp of the basics. Now it is just a matter of getting the proper techniques down for each play. After that we are off and running."

On what he appreciates most about RB Rock Cartwright:

"Everybody knows Rock (Cartwright) and I have been around for seven years. He is the heart and soul of this team. He is a good special teams guy and a good running back as well. He is a great guy."

On how things are going to be different for the running backs:

"A lot of the running plays are similar, but the passing game is a lot different for us. I think we are going to have a lot of opportunity to catch the ball in open areas and make some plays out in the passing game as well."

On how he will spend the rest of his offseason:

"I actually take the first week off to spend time with my daughter. After that I am right back training, which is when I do my serious training. I call it my boot camp, my little three to four weeks before training camp . I usually go to Atlanta. I have a guy that I train with down there. That is when I really try to work on my diet and get ready for the heat and practices twice a day. [I have been doing it] since I have been in the League, all seven years."

On if he likes the changes:

"There is a little bit of fresh blood. Guys are feeling good. We have a new offense, especially in the passing game. It is a good feeling. Guys are upbeat and it gives us something to look forward to."

Chris Samuels (OT, #60)

On practicing in the hot weather:

"We know that we have to get out here and learn a new system, especially with a new coach coming in. Overall, guys probably want to be relaxing by the pool. This is our job, so we are happy to be here."

On the amount of work that he puts in:

"A lot of people think we play this easy game and get paid a lot of money, but there's a lot of work that goes into it. You need to go out there when you are hurting, tired, and mentally worn out. It is just part of our job to keep pushing through."

Fred Smoot (CB, #27)

On the whereabouts of CB Shawn Springs:

"He is in Arizona working hard. He always comes back as one of the best conditioned guys on the team, so it's nothing to worry about."

On the heat:

"It's like 99 degrees out there today. We fought through it and we still had a good practice. Guys weren't really complaining that it was hot. We just keep working and try to get better. That is the attitude that you want to see this time of year."

On if he tones down the amount he talks because of the heat:

"No, I don't. That is the only thing that keeps a lot of people going out there. The sun is on our backs, so we need to talk each other through it."

On CB Shawn Springs missing practice:

"I don't look at it like he is skipping out. He is doing what he feels comfortable doing to get ready for the season. If he comes and doesn't play at the same level, then I am sure the people in the front office will find something wrong with that. As long as he is playing like he is playing, don't take him out of his comfort zone."

On the defense improving:

"[You can see] a lot from the continuity standpoint. When you have guys that are used to playing with each other, we don't want to let the tempo go down. We want to keep the tempo at one stage and go higher. We do not want to go lower. That is what I am seeing. We take every rep seriously and never go out there just to go out there. We have a great veteran group here."

On Ethan Albright:

"He is the most dependable player. He is a guy that hasn't made a mistake at his position in maybe ten years. That is unheard of in our job because everybody makes mistakes, but Ethan hasn't made them. He has been in the league for 14 or 15 years doing the same thing. It speaks for itself and evidently he is great at something. He is not just good, he is great."
