Training Camp Day 6 ...Both Andre Carter and Jason Taylor made plays in the backfield on Marcus Mason this morning, drawing cheers from the crowd of a couple thousand. The more Taylor is in camp, the better he looks. Of course, he's mostly facing a rookie tackle in Chad Rinehart, but Taylor has shown he has a lot left to offer.
...Taylor doesn't waste his footwork. He ran a stunt inside on one play and did not stray from his path, taking as direct a route as possible. Just another thing to pay attention to.
...Andre Carter is working at left end at times, too. Been an adjustment for him, but, as he points out, better to endure it now so he can get used to it, though Taylor will line up there more often.
...Jim Zorn's wife, Joy, was at practice today. Little something on her: she loves talking as much as her husband, but she's unbelievably proud of her husband. When I talked to her in mid-June for a story on her husband for the Washington Examiner, she could not have been more helpful. She was in Seattle, but talked with me for a good 40 minutes. After we hung up, she called back again with another story to share. She then called back a second time. This is a family very excited for what's happened to them.
...Also, it's funny how perception has changed regarding Zorn. He does not seem out of place being a head coach. Not at all. We still don't know what's going to happen, but he does not seem overmatched. It will take him a while to learn certain things. We talked to a veteran reporter the other day about how much Zorn is taking on in his first year. Common rookie mistake. He'll learn.
...Jason Campbell had a sharp morning workout, hitting receivers in stride on both short and long passes in seven-on-seven. There's no doubt that he's the top man in camp at that position.
...Anthony Mix made a nice one-handed grab vs. Leigh Torrence this morning. Mix is, well, in the mix if the Redskins keep six receivers. Billy McMullen, Maurice Mann, Burl Toler are the others.
...Malcolm Kelly (leg) likely won't play in the intrasquad scrimmage Saturday. Lots of little nicks and bruises starting to pile up. Because of the 80-man roster limit, this bears watching.
...The national press is working its way through Ashburn. This week we've had Clark Judge (CBS Sportsline); Jeff Chadiha (ESPN.com) and Peter King (SI).
