...Best wishes to the Bugel family. Coach Joe Bugel is in Houston with his family and daughter Holly, who has a rare form of bone cancer. He could be gone for a week. Owner Dan Snyder let Bugel fly to Houston on his plane after the Bills game. Say what you want about Snyder – and we have – but he always comes through during times of crisis for his family and staff. It's happened every year it seems.
...Defensive end Erasmus James was taken off the physically unable to perform list after passing his physical within the past week. James participated in individual drills and is expected to take part in full-pad work Tuesday morning.
James would give the Redskins another potential pass rusher, though he has just five sacks in 23 career games. Can he go inside? Guess so. But at 261 pounds he's small – and fragile. The Vikings did not like him in that role for those reasons.
...James said he hasn't ruled out playing Saturday.
...Defensive line coach John Palermo put his group through an agility drill in which they run around two large hula hoops, touching their hands down halfway around. At one point, he yelled to Matthias Askew, "Get that big ass down! Keep your eyes up straight."
...Chris Wilson did a good job in that drill. Still haven't seen him do ANYTHING during team drills.
...When James did this drill, he went fairly quick. "I don't care how fast you do it," Palermo told him.
...Rob Jackson was very quick getting around the hoops. The kid has some ability, but he was rather quiet against the Bills.
...After Colt Brennan threw an incompletion to Chris Cooley in a four-on-four drill, Marcus Washington chirped, "Get a new play! Get a new play!" Washington is having as much fun as anyone this camp.
...Alfred Fincher picked off a pass in practice today. But I wonder about his ability to play special teams. It's not anything I saw in the game, but Danny Smith chided him in a special teams practice this afternoon.
...Antwaan Randle El turned around Leigh Torrence on one route. Randle El looks good as well.
...Here's the big debate (well, not that big): Who will catch more passes, Chris Cooley or Santana Moss? Cooley will be open a lot, but if this offense is to be dynamic, Moss has to be the guy. One thought is that Cooley will have more catches, but that Moss will have more yards. Could be.
...Couldn't see who he was talking to, but Fred Smoot got off a good line during practice after a good play by one corner, "Got a little peanut butter with that jam?"
...Khary Campbell had a pick today.
...Carlos Rogers is in midseason form. Want to know why we say that? Because he dropped an interception. But I will say, he's looked as good, or better, as any corner.
...Rogers still likely won't play until the Carolina preseason game at the earliest. That's what he's looking at and, thus far, he's been dead-on with where he was at.
...Devin Thomas returned to practice for the first time since July 24. He dropped one pass, but he did show a good ability to get in and out of his break. Thomas might play this week.
...Chad Rinehart stuck around after practice to work on his pass sets.
